  88. 2 NOT HARRY POTTER

‘Ribs smashed, internal bleeding, multiple blows to the head,’ Remi said darkly, as he found his trousers over the back of a dining chair and began stepping into them.

‘My god,’ Julius said, eyes welling.

‘The teachers told the ambulance crew that Duke had fallen down some stairs. When I spoke to your headmaster, he claimed Duke was beaten because he made unwanted sexual advances towards three younger boys. He all but told me Duke had got what he deserved.’

‘I’m sorry,’ Julius said, staring down at the mess. ‘For everything, but especially my family … I expect my headmaster will have a fat wallet, courtesy of my mother.’

‘Undoubtedly,’ Remi said, smiling wryly. ‘How did you pass the goons in the lobby?’

Julius only now realised the three men were here to intimidate Remi.

‘Via the storage cages,’ Julius explained, unzipping his backpack. ‘So, how is Duke?’

‘Better than before,’ Remi said, upset. ‘My nephew’s face was a bloody pulp. He can see out of both eyes now and is eating soft things. He must leave hospital tomorrow because I can’t afford it.’

‘This might help a little,’ Julius said, taking six hundred US dollars from the backpack. ‘I took it from my mum. I had to bribe a school janitor and buy a new phone, but this is the rest. If I’d known Duke was hospitalised … Maybe I can help some more …’

Remi smiled warily as Julius put the money down on the dining table, the top bare because everything had been tipped onto the floor.

‘Is this the scene where your mother has cops burst in and arrest me for handling stolen cash?’ Remi asked as he reached towards the money. His tone changed when he saw the hurt on Julius’s face, ‘I’m sorry. I’m an old cynic.’

‘I’m ashamed …’ Julius began. ‘Let me know anything I can do to help with your corruption investigations. Mum will send me to Army Boys Academy once a place opens up. But I’ll be around in holidays and I can open the lock on my mother’s office.’

Remi nodded thoughtfully as he took the money off the table. ‘You can see the pressure I am under, with my home smashed and goons following my every step. You seem like a decent young man, and your support is appreciated.’

‘I try,’ Julius said. ‘Since Duke isn’t here, I’ll head back to school. If I sneak into the grounds before lunchtime’s over, there’s a chance they won’t miss me. Can I give you my new mobile number, to pass along to Duke?’

Remi saw a pen on the floor and gave it to Julius.

‘Duke doesn’t have a new phone, so I’ll give you my details. He asks if I’ve heard from you every time I visit the hospital, so I’m certain he’ll send a message once he gets your number.’
