‘I can find another cab company,’ John said.

‘And you found her in the flat,’ Georgia added. ‘Do you really want to sleep there tonight?’

But Zac had stopped listening. He was focused on retrieving a battered canvas bag that he’d left by the bins.

‘Sophie said these are the ones you like,’ Zac explained as he took out a shrink-wrapped box of Jirafu notepaper, embossed with the logo for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Jirafu was Georgia’s favourite stationery brand. She tried to collect all the different pads they released each year, but the Tokyo 2020 ones were gifted to members of the Olympic Committee and had never been sold to the public.

‘Do you know how she got them?’ Georgia asked, turning the packet over in wonder. ‘I always look on eBay. Everyone on the Jirafu fan site wants these!’

‘She said you’d be excited,’ Zac said, clearly bemused by Georgia’s stationery obsession. ‘I also found these on her desk.’ Zac’s hand trembled as he held three envelopes with Sophie’s writing on the outside. One To Mum, one To Daddy, and one marked To Georgia.

SEVEN

The after-school adventure seemed dreamlike now that Julius was back under guard. He sat at the desk in his bedroom, curtains drawn, schoolbooks spread and his face lit by a Wikipedia page on his laptop screen.

He’d stripped down to undershorts, but stayed hot. He kept reading the same line from a textbook, In a ray diagram, the mirror is drawn as a straight line with thick hatchings … The words bounced off a brain that was still at the penguin pool, watching Duke glide on his neon deck. The light rays are drawn with straight lines, with arrowheads that show the direction of …

Julius groaned and wheeled his chair back. He stared at the silent vents of the air conditioning and decided to blame his lack of concentration on the heat.

Gabe had a friend in the house, shooting Nerf guns along a shadowy hallway as Julius stepped out of his room and headed downstairs sprayed with foam darts. He stopped to look out of the landing window. Two bored soldiers guarded the front gate from white plastic chairs, while an array of generator parts were spread over the tiled driveway. An orange-overalled engineer stared at them, his clueless air suggesting little chance of power being restored any time soon.

Julius carried on down to a large kitchen on the ground floor. The wipe-down walls, functional steel benches and large commercial appliances clearly belonging to people whose staff did the cooking.

‘When’s the power coming back?’ Julius asked, moving towards the stove and feeling his stomach growl as he lifted the lid on bubbling pepper soup.

Orisa hopped across the floor and smacked Julius’s hand away. ‘Leave my food until it is ready!’
