‘Can I get a selfie?’ Sam asked.

Georgia didn’t love the idea, but she was fond of Sam.

Wendy had taken all of a minute to switch from suspect to publicist. ‘I need a phone to start making calls,’ she told her wife. ‘Georgia, you’re going to be colossal! Newspaper exclusives, talk shows, modelling. Not just in the UK – this trial has made you international.’

As Sam posted the selfie #GEORGIAISFREE, Georgia backed into the rows of seats and signalled for her dad to follow.

‘You OK, Cookie?’ he asked.

‘Could have gone worse,’ Georgia said, keeping her voice low so nobody else could hear. ‘But I don’t want a circus. I want to go home. Take a long bath, put on pyjamas, watch junk TV and fall asleep in my own bed …’

John wore the face that told her Santa didn’t exist.

‘What?’

‘I didn’t want to say till this was over,’ John explained. ‘I’ve moved in with your nan. Your mother and I agreed to sell the house to pay for the Freeman Unit and your legal bills.’

FIFTY-NINE

The wallet was gone.

Julius threw everything out of the bag onto his bed and frantically checked again, starting with the pocket of his Supreme hoodie, where the wallet was supposed to be, then going through every other pocket, shaking out schoolbooks, turning socks inside out and pushing his hand under the board lining at the base of his wheeled bag.

Who could have swiped it? Matt and Mr Apple seemed unlikely, but a whole chain of people had handled his stuff since he’d left The Hall. From whoever packed up his room, to the receptionist on the Freeman Unit’s front desk and the nurse who’d searched his bags for contraband.

With no wallet, all Julius had was a few pounds from the blazer he’d arrived in. The frustration made him thump his mattress, then kick scrunched clothes that had dropped to the floor.

You weren’t supposed to go into other patients’ rooms, so Julius made sure the nurses were out of sight before hopping across the hallway. Alex lay on her bed, with the TV on and Georgia’s big Toblerone mostly gone.

‘You want some?’ Alex asked guiltily.

Julius saw the TV. It was a recording from an hour earlier. Megan Seebag stood in a press room at Woolwich Crown Court with Georgia alongside, her parents behind and a million cameras clicking.

‘This has been a long and difficult journey for Georgia and her family. Over the coming days, I must ask that the media treat the Pack family with respect and allow them privacy …’

‘So cool that she got off,’ Alex smiled, as a triangle of chocolate stretched her cheek.

‘Only just realised,’ Julius said, stepping over grubby clothes, paperbacks, towels and half-eaten food. ‘I’m distracted. And some dickhead ripped off my wallet.’

‘How much?’

‘A couple of hundred, and my debit card …’
