Rather than squint at his phone, Julius grabbed a remote and flipped the wall-mounted TV to BBC News. The screen showed a looped video of the attack. Not the jerky low-latency video Georgia had flown by, but the high-def feed from the stabilised camera slung under the drone’s belly. The approach looked like video-game footage as it zoomed over construction equipment and closed on the prime minister’s rear. Everything spun and went red. Then orange. Then blacked out, before the eerily silent video resumed from a hover thirty metres above chaos.
Prime minister’s injuries described as serious but not life-threatening scrolled across the bottom of the screen. French ambassador serious but stable …
The news channel switched from drone footage to an excited correspondent at a police cordon.
‘The video of the attack has been watermarked by a group calling itself Radical Anti-Government Socialists,’ she explained. ‘It’s not a group I have previously heard of, but the attack clearly shows sophisticated planning and knowledge of the prime minister’s schedule.’
‘Christine, I’m going to interrupt you there,’ the newsreader in the studio said, as the director cut back to the newsroom. ‘We’re getting more on this fast-moving story. Reports are coming in of a bizarre incident at City Lodge Hotel, close to the Banque Générale site, and from which several eye witnesses say the drone was launched.
‘Hotel staff say two bloodied men were taken to hospital under police escort following a stabbing incident. There has been no official police statement, but a hotel manager told a reporter from the Newman News Agency that she was called to the room after a guest reported hearing a disturbance. She said the window in the room had been forced open and the room contained a second drone, as well as a laptop that was still relaying a live video feed.
‘A hotel security officer challenged a young woman fleeing the scene, but she was able to escape through a fire exit.
‘I have also just been told we have a short statement from the City of London Police. It concerns a suspect who is a minor, but we have been cleared to release her identity, as she may present a danger to public safety.
‘The statement says, “An initial viewing of CCTV footage has led investigating officers to suspect that the person who fled City Lodge after assaulting a member of hotel security staff is Georgia Pack.”
‘Viewers may recall, Pack was the teenage activist who adorned the front page of many newspapers when she led a series of school walkouts during anti-government protests in April. Pack is known to be an experienced drone racing pilot …’
