Friday night hadn’t been the Roman orgy Julius had plotted on the phone with Duke. But three guys and two girls from The Hall had rocked up for a fun night, involving poker, beer, truth or dare, shots of his uncle’s £750-a-bottle whisky, a monster joint and a curtain rail getting pulled off the wall.
‘I will call Simon Adebisi about this,’ his uncle’s third wife’s father threatened, from out in the hallway. ‘Your antics kept us awake past 3 a.m.’
The couple doddered out as Julius sat up, rubbing a gluey eye and easing off the polo shirt stuck to his back.
Milena was already cleaning up. Spray bottles and cloths stood on the coffee table and there was a trash bag filled with beer cans in the doorway. Julius’s hangover was mild, but stepping on the sharp edge of a bottle opener made him yelp, hop, then crash across a leather sofa.
His phone dug into his thigh as he sat up. He fished it out and saw the battery was down to nineteen per cent. It was almost eleven, so he was surprised to see nothing from Duke. But Anya from school had messaged to ask if she’d left her jacket at his house and Matt had sent a pic of a half-dressed girl in one of the spare bedrooms and the message, You should probably change the sheets …
‘I’m sorry about the mess,’ Julius told Milena guiltily when he passed her in the hallway, using bleach and a dish sponge to work a stain off a chair.
His thoughts turned to the election back home as he stepped into his room. He sat on the end of his bed, opened a Nigerian news app, clicked the State Elections tab and scrolled. Thirty-three of thirty-six states had now declared governorship results, but Ondo wasn’t one of them.
When he tapped Ondo, the headlines had barely changed from the day before.
Adebisi-Rotimi battle too close to call.
Second recounts demanded amidst allegations of fake ballots.
Death toll in rural polling station shoot-out rises to five.
Adebisi says, ‘Result closer than anticipated,’ as Rotimi supporters bullish.
Second night of violence hits Akure and Ondo City.
Julius considered messaging Duke, but they often stayed online for more than an hour, so he decided to shower first. As he moved to put his phone on a charging pad, a green Breaking News box rolled across the screen.
London: Sensational footage as prime minister suffer burns in drone attack.
