- About the Author
“Yeah, I thought I would be too but that’s okay. It smells good in here. What are we…having?” She stumbles on the last word when she enters the kitchen and sees Olivia standing at the sink. “Oh, hi. I didn’t realize we had company.”
“Hi Kylie.”
“Olivia.” Fuck.
“Come in, let me fix you a plate.” Po Po taps the chair next to her at the small kitchen table.
“No, no. You sit. I was joking. I’m not hungry. I’ll just get some wine and get out of your way.”
“You’re not in the way, sis.”
She looks Olivia up and down. “Right.” She grabs the bottle of red wine from the counter and a glass from the cabinet. As she pours, she asks, “So, Olivia. How does it feel to be back here?”
Olivia clears her throat. “Umm, different.”
“Yeah. I bet if it weren’t for that injury you’d have never come back, huh?”
“Kylie,” I warn.
“What? It’s just a question.” Her gaze never leaves Olivia as she sips her wine.
“Honestly, you’re right. I probably wouldn’t have come back here if it weren’t for the injury.” That hurts to hear but it’s not unexpected. “But that has nothing to do with any of you and everything to do with me.”
“Not surprising. Everything was about you.”
“Alright, enough.”
I see Olivia attempting to wave me off from the corner of my eye, but I ignore her. Kylie looks at me with defiance in her eyes. “I’m looking out for you, Kai.”
“I’m not gonna tell you again that I don’t need you to do that. Dial it back. Now.”
“Fine.”
“Fine.”
Kylie tops off her wine glass and turns to leave when Olivia calls her name. “I just want you to know I’m sorry.”
Kylie stops long enough for Olivia to know she heard her and then continues on her way.
We say our goodbyes to Po Po, with Olivia promising her to come see her again and then we ride back to her place in silence.
“I’m sorry about Kylie.”
“Don’t be. I deserved it. And don’t try to tell me I didn’t. I abandoned her just like I abandoned you. You’re just a saint who won’t let me take responsibility for my actions.”
I’m not a saint. I just want her more than I want to be mad at her.
