- About the Author
Auntie breaks away from the girls to go over to Po Po and lean down for a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Maggie. You’re looking fierce, girl. Is that the glow of a man I see?” I watch Auntie for any signs of animosity toward Po Po, any hint that she knows what I know. I don’t see any which throws me for a loop because my dad tells his sister everything. So why wouldn’t he have told her about Po Po’s reaction to him? Maybe he was worried she’d beat Po Po’s ass, which isn’t a stretch. Dad has said that she took her role as his older sister very serious, and she got into a lot of fights over him growing up.
Po Po giggles, which is something I don’t think I’ve ever seen her do, but shakes her head. “No, no. Even though Ya Tou’s been trying to get me on that hanky-panky site.”
My eyes fly over to Kylie who just shrugs. “I was trying to convince her to let me make her a profile on Hinge.”
“Who needs Hinge when you have me? I have a network of silver foxes I could introduce you to. Ooh, let’s see, there’s—”
Curtis cuts her off. “Trice, don’t play.”
She waves him away and leans closer to Po Po, but still keeps her voice loud enough for everyone to hear. “Curtis is very sensitive about the fact that his daddy and all his friends are fine as hell. I got you though.”
“How’s Mr. Anthony doing by the way?” Olivia’s voice is casual as she asks, but my eyes narrow in suspicion.
Curtis huffs. “Man, go head.”
Olivia and Kylie fall into a fit of laughter before Kylie finally pulls it together to speak. “Honestly, Unc, your daddy has no business being that fine.”
“You’re not allowed to say that shit—excuse me, Maggie, I mean stuff. He’s family. And you’re barely legal.”
“I’m very legal. And I hate to keep reminding you of this but we’re only related by marriage.” Kylie tries to hug him but he stiff-arms her.
Auntie and Kylie continue teasing Curtis while Olivia snuggles up to me. I turn to whisper in her ear. “You know I’m gonna have to punish you for that later, right?”
“I’m counting on it.”
Every year, Shane and I volunteer at the children’s hospital the day after Christmas. We volunteer often throughout the year, but the day after Christmas is the one day we make sure we’re there at the same date and time. This year is no different despite Auntie and Curtis’s visit. Auntie and Olivia plan to spend the day together while Curtis meets up with an old friend.
