She tried to straighten up, tossed her long hair down her back. “‘Colors of the Wind.’”
I expected him to wince or tell her to fuck off, but Mike broke into a grin, sat at her side, and started playing the Disney song. Jade started waving her arms in the air—oozing that sort of carefree charm that only totally wasted girls can exude. They started harmonizing in the chorus, and all of us turned to watch them, enchanted, our faces orange, our eyes red. When it came to how high the sycamore can grow, Jade stood up, reaching into the dark sky, screeching the lyrics ’til her throat closed, and everyone cheered, Mike laughed so hard he almost stopped playing guitar. He stared at her in wonder, as if he was seeing her for the first time, and I felt this thumping jealousy. Him and Jade finished in a harmony, their heads falling together, and were greeted with applause.
“You guys are too cute,” Phil said, and Mike raised his eyebrows, enjoying the kudos.
He moved closer to Jade. His arm crept around the back of her bare midriff and he pulled her into him. She carried on chatting to everyone, pretending she wasn’t hugely aware of the development, reaching out and demanding more whiskey. “Play ‘I Won’t Say I’m In Love’ from Hercules,” she demanded.
“I don’t know it.”
“Well, I know it.” She stumbled up, waved her arms as if she was conducting an orchestra, and launched into a solo, cementing herself as legend of the night. Everyone joined in. Laughing when they couldn’t reach the high notes, just about drowning out another strange sound coming from Liam and Jessica’s tent, that only I noticed. I craned my head, worried. It had sounded like someone crying. But then Jade fell backward off her camping chair, laughing with her legs in the air like a bug. Mike was on her, claiming to help her up, but, instead lay on top of her and kissed her while pinning her to the ground. I tilted my head, checking she was OK. But she’d wrapped her legs around him and seemed delighted.
