Sorry again it took me so long to email. Things are just nonstop here, but really great. I love my course. I love the creative writing the most. Danny says I’m good. We are STILL just friends, SIGH. But spend so much time together everyone calls us “The Couple.” I wish he would finally make a move! Anyway, my piece for the paper made it to page seven, which is pretty cool! I like the Me I am up here, if that makes sense? Come visit! I think you’ll like her too!

I’m looking at the Trainline and there are tickets to Manchester that are only £7.50 each way. Before then it’s too pricey. Would that work? I know it’s just before you come home for Christmas, but still... Let me know ASAP and I’ll book. We have SO much to catch up on, Fern. I can’t wait.

now.

“Another bottle?” Ben asked me, grinning over the posh tablecloth. He was wearing the only good suit he owned, but looked hot anyway.

I smiled back, and twisted around to our waiter. “Go on then,” I told him. “We’re celebrating.”

“I’ll bring it right over.” The man gave a little bow, then went off to secure more of the second-cheapest wine in the restaurant.

I pulled a sulky face. “He didn’t ask me what we were celebrating.”

Ben laughed as he poured the last dregs of our previous bottle into his glass. “You just lowered our rank in this place. He must know only plebs come here to ‘celebrate.’ Everyone else here is just having a casual dinner.”

“I can be casual. I am so casual.” I lifted my posture and tried to copy everyone around me. We were in a posh “small plates” restaurant that everyone richer than me kept raving about. I’d never spent so much money to still feel so hungry. And, though we could just about afford to be there, I still felt very much like Jack in the first-class section of Titanic. I held my chin up, and lifted my pinkie on the wineglass, and started talking in a plummy voice. “I do worry little Henrietta won’t take to lacrosse,” I said. “Also, she wants to come home and actually see us at Christmas, can you think of anything more ghastly?”

Ben let out a burst of laughter, and then sucked his chest in, playing along. “If only she’d been a boy,” he added. “I do feel she’s done it deliberately, ruining the heirship.”

I lifted my mostly empty glass. “Well, if the test results come back OK, then we can try for another. I can’t BELIEVE how weird they’re being about us being cousins.”
