Chapters (46)
I’m so excited that I don’t even care that the secretary gives me attitude while she looks for the application. I don’t care that I almost trip walking down the steps of the photography building and that Frank catches the whole thing.
I’m so caught up in the moment that I temporarily lose my mind and forget my vow to stay away from Drew. I run into the house, hoping he’s home. No one else is going to understand this, and I have to share it with someone.
“Drew!” I yell, running up the stairs to the house. Frank rushes to keep up with me and is doing a pretty good job. Which is why I’m sure he catches the exact look on my face when I open the door to Drew’s room. And find him in bed. With Kelly.
I look at Drew. Drew looks at me. I turn on my heel and run down the stairs and back out the front door. The cold air hits my face, and I’m gasping for breath. I feel like there’s a rubber band around my chest.
“Ally!” Drew says, and from the sounds of footsteps behind me, I can tell he’s coming after me. He catches me when I’m halfway across the lawn. “Ally!” he says, grabbing my arm.
“Don’t touch me!” I yell, wrenching away from his grasp.
“Ally, nothing happened,” he says.
I whirl around to face him. “Nothing happened? Nothing happened? You were in bed with Kelly and you expect me to believe nothing happened? I’m a little too smart for that, Drew.”
I turn around and start to walk away from him, but he grabs my arm. “Ally, come on, I want to talk about this.”
“There’s nothing to talk about,” I say, shaking him off.
“I told you, nothing happened. I don’t even know her. I just met her yesterday.”
“Oh, really?” I laugh loudly, throwing my head back. “Good to know that you let girls you’ve known less than twenty-four hours into your bed. And here I thought I was special.”
Suddenly I have an awful thought. Why would Kelly write in her article that she’d never met Drew and then end up in his bed a week later? Did Drew know what she was doing? Did he help her write that article?
“How do you know her?” I ask, crossing my arms in front of my chest. I can feel the tears starting behind my eyes, and it takes everything I have to keep them from spilling over my cheeks. “How do you know Kelly?”
“I don’t, really. I told you, I just met her yesterday. Ally, come on, let’s go inside and talk about this. It’s freezing out here.” I look down and see that he’s not wearing any shoes.
