  46. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING

Many visits to doctors and specialists later and we were on our last round of IVF. Last because it was costing us a fortune, and last because it hurt so much every time my body failed us. With two embryos left on ice we decided to increase our chances and use them both in the final embryo transfer. We didn’t expect them both to take. We didn’t expect to be so lucky. We hadn’t dared to dream it.

‘Did you sort out the plans?’ I ask.

‘Yes, all ready for first thing tomorrow,’ he says, taking my hand.

Two hours later, after five-and-a-half hours of travelling thanks to Liam’s constant stops, we arrive at the most stunning house on offer in Cornwall’s Mawgan Porth.

‘I’ll give you a hand, mate,’ shouts Nick from the house’s vast wraparound balcony, and before we know it the whole group is outside, ridding the car of its contents. Even Chloe wanders off with my huge pregnancy pillow in an effort to be helpful.

‘It’s so good to see you,’ says Vicky, her eyes firmly on my bump. ‘How are you feeling?’ she adds, her eyes flicking up to meet mine.

‘Great,’ I smile.

She beams in response and does her best to hug me, which is a little awkward given the size of me but nice nonetheless.

‘We’re all here!’ sings Mike, grinning as he places his arms around us both and plants a kiss on my cheek. ‘Hello, Twins!’ he says with a sudden outburst, bending over so that his lips are against the fabric of my dress. ‘Helloooo, it’s Uncle Mike here.’

‘Be careful one doesn’t kick you in the face,’ I tease, my smile showing how pleased I am to be back with these two special people.

I manage to get through dinner before the afternoon of travelling catches up with me and I have to admit defeat. Off to bed I go, reminding everyone that we have plans first thing and not to get too carried away.

‘OK, Mum,’ grins Mike, giving me an eyeroll to boot.

I pick up the nearest cushion and chuck it in his direction.

It’s busier than I expected when we arrive at Land’s End the following morning, something I maybe should’ve expected with it being a Saturday, but there’s not much we can do about the footfall now.

‘If we head up that way there’s a lovely cliff and then we can have some time exploring the joys of Cornwall,’ says Mike, pointing to his left before heading in that very direction and expecting us to follow.

I glance at Liam and he reads the look in my eye that’s telling him our plan is going to fall apart if people start moving away.
