‘Actually, we thought we’d be a bit touristy and get a picture,’ he calls out, pointing at the well-known Land’s End signpost perched in front of us, its arrows pointing at different landmarks around the world.
‘Oh no, you have to book,’ says Vicky, dismissing the idea with the back of her hand before starting to head in Mike’s direction.
‘But I’ve booked it!’ I shout in panic.
They turn and look at me.
‘You have?’ Vicky checks.
‘Thought it might be nice to get a group photo,’ I shrug.
‘Oh. You should’ve said!’ says Mike, making me wonder why I thought any of them would’ve got suspicious if I had told them anyway.
‘I’ll be two secs,’ Liam says, going over to the operator sitting in the neighbouring hut and exchanging a few words, a few moments later holding his thumbs up and beckoning us all over.
‘You all stand out front and Rob there is going to take your picture,’ the greying operator says in a thick Cornish accent while gesturing to a nearby teenager. ‘He’s good at finding your best angles, you see. Just got to give him a few minutes – perfectionist, he is.’
‘If you all stand in the middle I’ll tell you where to go because you don’t want to go messing up this shot. You want to be bang on centre,’ says Rob, fiddling with his hair before taking my phone.
‘Really?’ mutters Vicky as we gather before him.
‘OK, that’s great,’ Rob says, holding the phone up. ‘Actually, if you can all take two steps that way … yep. Oh no, too far. Half a step the other way now. Forward a bit …’
‘Is he having a laugh?’ chuckles Mike.
I stand to one side rather than in the centre, keeping an eye on the operator as he slips around our group and heads to the Land’s End sign. He goes to the arrow that the public are able to have personalized and starts changing the words. His hands are quick and he masters our request in seconds. He turns and nods at Rob before going back to his hut.
‘Right, I’ve got one of these,’ says Rob, looking down at the phone in his hands. ‘But I have one last picture I’d like to do. On the count of three I want you all to turn and look at the sign. Let’s see who can read it out the loudest. OK, one, two, three – go!’
‘It’s triplets!’ the group shouts, before stunned faces start looking from me to Liam, to the bump.
‘What?’ says Vicky, her hands covering her face.
‘There’s three in there?’ asks Mike.
‘Three?’ repeat both Barnaby and Chloe, looking at my bump like they can’t make sense of it.
‘Guys,’ Nick says, placing a hand on Liam’s shoulder. ‘Triplets?’
