‘No.’ Jenkins held up a hand. ‘I want to say this.’ He stared down at the table, and Sasha and Craig waited for him to gather his thoughts. ‘Things weren’t great at home at that time. We all knew what she got up to in Cardiff, clubbing and getting off her face. She was just a young girl, they all do that I suppose. So we went up to Edeyrnion, in Denbighshire. It’s beautiful up there, we’d taken Rhiannon there when she was a little girl. The wife and I thought we’d all do healthy stuff like go for long walks and outward bound centres, and eat nice meals in the evenings, get some early nights. The idea was to give Rhiannon peace and quiet, a bit of time to chill out, but, of course, she hated every moment of it. She was bored and restless, and sat on her phone the whole time, texting mates.
‘And that one night, just that night, she asked to go out on her own. Just to the local pub, she said, because she was bored of sitting in the B&B of an evening. And I said…’ He sighed. ‘I said yes. Rhiannon was so pleased and relieved, and she put on a nice dress and all her make-up like she was going to the biggest nightclub in town rather than a shitty little pub in the middle of nowhere. She looked a million dollars, she took our breath away.’ His eyes lifted to Sasha’s. ‘And we never saw her again.’
Davey Jenkins sat back and folded his arms. ‘Her dad, Owen, has got no one in his final days. The cancer’s got him now and I reckon he’s got six months left in him, tops. We’re not close now, because of what happened.’ Jenkins cleared his throat. ‘I can’t give him back his daughter, but I can find out the truth before he dies. And that’s why I grabbed the celebrity off the street, because I wanted to find out what he did with Rhiannon. Not to kill him, more’s the pity, but just to find out the truth.’
‘Why do you blame them still?’ asked Sasha, absently moving her pen between her fingers. ‘Abs and Andrew Dean, Jeremy Weston and Tony Gardner were all released without charge. They were just four of many people in the pub that night. Rhiannon was seen leaving at ten o’clock, more than two hours before they left the premises. Why do you think it was them?’
