Acknowledgements

Sasha Dawson will be back, you can be quite sure of that. In the meantime, let me thank a few people who helped in the writing of The Woman in the Wood.

Michael Gradwell and Inspector Kevin Horn are my go-to guys when I need to ask about police procedure. They have patiently answered all my questions – sometimes the same ones – over the course of several books now. And the same goes for Senior Paramedic Jason Eddings, who assists with all the medical detail. In addition, Gordon Staples kindly helped with the chapter about approved premises.

Sharon Harris from Bear Estate Agents helped me find my way around Southend and South Essex. Scientist Kath Mashiter, MBE, kindly shared some of her forty years’ forensic experience, as did crime writers Caro Ramsay and Nicola Monaghan. I’m grateful to Robert Stirling-Gallacher, who provided a typical moment of inspiration, and I should also thank Colin Scott, without whom this book would have been written a hell of a lot more quickly.

And, of course, there’s the talented crew at my publisher, Head of Zeus. Special mentions go to wonderful editor Laura Palmer, editorial assistant Anna Nightingale, production manager Christian Duck, Vicky Joss in digital marketing, publicist Kate Appleton, marketing director Jessie Sullivan, copy editor Jenni Davis and proofreader Neil Burkey. As usual, Mark Swan has delivered a cover to die for.

Many thanks once again to my unfeasibly tall agent, Jamie Cowen, at The Ampersand Agency, who helped launch me on this crazy writing adventure, and to Rosie and Jessica Buckman at The Buckman Agency.

As usual, friends and family encouraged and supported me as I wrote this book. Fiona and Archie have to put up with me on a daily basis – so extra love and apologies go to them. And my office would be a lonely place without my devoted four-legged writing companions. Gracie and Jason never fail to lift my spirits on the good writing days, and the bad.
