‘Thanks,’ he said, and she didn’t know if he had heard her at all.
Ajay knocked on the door and popped his head inside – he’d probably seen through the glass how uncomfortable Sasha looked and knew she needed saving – and said, ‘Abs is in the interview room as you requested.’
‘Thanks, Ajay.’ She made an apologetic face to Vaughn. ‘I’d better get back to work.’

He was relieved when the detective inspector he liked, the one with the granny hair, walked into the room and said, ‘How are you, Abs?’
He stood, uncertain of what to do. His instinctive response when he saw a familiar face was to move in for a friendly hug or kiss – God knows he needed comfort right now – but he knew that in the circumstances it may not be the proper thing to do. Another man, a young Asian guy who looked like he should be gracing the cover of GQ, sat beside her, a slim folder in his hand.
‘You’re looking great, Detective Lawson,’ he said, nodding vaguely at her hair.
‘Thank you, Abs. It’s Dawson. This is my colleague, Detective Sergeant Ajay de Vaz.’ Flipping open a notebook, she gave him a sympathetic look. ‘So, Abs, it sounds like you’ve had a terrible shock.’
Abs blew out his cheeks. ‘I’m shook up about it, to be honest.’
‘Please.’ Sasha gestured for him to sit and he dropped into the chair, flattening his hands between his clenched legs because he didn’t know what else to do with them. He was shattered from a lack of sleep and dosed up on painkillers because of the stinging pains in his arms and legs. Abs didn’t go to hospital for treatment because he didn’t want his ordeal to hit the papers, not now a big comeback was on the cards. He was just thankful he hadn’t suffered any loss of skin on his face, where people could properly see it.
Instead, he’d tried to get some shut-eye. But every time he closed his eyes, he saw behind his lids the spinning room in the cottage in Wales. That blade of early morning light knifing through the gap in the curtains, the glass of water at his feet, the damp-stain on the ceiling, the mattress on the floor, all of it whirling around in his head.
Part of him wanted to just forget the kidnap last night even happened, put it down to some random attack, people playing a nasty joke on a celeb, but he knew that wasn’t the case. Davey Jenkins and his mates wanted to kill him, just like they killed Deano.
‘Can you tell me that happened?’ asked Sasha Dawson gently.
