Only Kelsey’s love could help save him, only her love could make him feel better. He needed her love. He didn’t need to be loved by anyone except her. She would save him.
‘I don’t care about the show. If I’m not coming back to it, fine.’ His eyes filled with tears. ‘But I love you, Kelz. I’ve always loved you.’
Kelsey cupped his cheek, careful not to stab her long nails into his ear. ‘You’re a sweet guy, Abs, but you’re making a scene. Save it all for when we’re rolling.’
‘Okay, guys.’ The director clapped his hands. ‘Let’s get this show on the road. Kelsey, Abs, are you ready to go?’
‘Tell me you love me.’ His chest hurt, it was full to bursting with love and pain, fear and shame – and he needed to hear her say it. ‘I don’t care about any of the other stuff, just tell me we have a future.’
Kelsey frowned. ‘My publicist wouldn’t be happy, Abs.’
‘Fuck your publicist. Say you love me.’
‘Are we ready to shoot, guys?’ The director stepped forward, but Abs wouldn’t take his eyes off Kelsey.
‘Please tell me.’
‘You’re embarrassing yourself, Abs.’ Kelsey’s mouth was a terse line. ‘Let’s just film this scene, yeah, and then you better go.’
‘Tell me you love me,’ Abs shouted.
‘Listen to me, darlin.’ Kelz pulled him close, and when she spoke her voice was low and menacing. ‘I did you a big favour when nobody else will touch you with a bargepole, so do not embarrass me in front of my people, or I’ll make sure you never work in television again. I can do that, doll, you better believe I can.’
Abs stepped back, as if coming out of a trance.
She had never loved him. They were together because it was good for her career, because they were a stronger showbiz brand as a couple than on their own. But all that was over now.
He had done an unforgivable thing, and nobody was going to save him; an unforgivable thing, which he had to put right.
‘So, babes.’ Always the pro, a big smile lit up Kelsey’s face. ‘Shall we get this scene done?’
Abs pushed his way past the sound guy and the lighting guy and the director, and into the blazing sun, and walked quickly away.

Everyone stood around the clearing staring at the body, unable to believe what they were looking at. Everyone except Deano, who sat on the stump of a tree with his head between his legs.
‘Oh no-no-no.’ Tony spun in a circle. ‘This isn’t good, it isn’t good at all.’
