‘I’ll definitely try to do that,’ she said drily as he walked off.
When Vaughn had gone, she fumbled in her bag for her own phone. This time Connie deigned to pick up.
‘How old are you?’ Sasha asked her.
‘Excuse me?’
‘Vaughn has a lot on his plate at the moment, Con. We’re all very busy here, we’re always very busy, and the last thing he needs is you sending him silly texts every two seconds.’ When she saw Lolly and Craig watching, she slunk deeper into her chair, trying once again to shield herself behind her computer monitor.
‘How do you know it’s me?’
‘I saw the aubergine emoji, Con.’
‘Me and Claude share a bond,’ Connie told her indignantly. ‘I think he may be it, Sash. The One.’
‘Don’t be ridiculous,’ said Sasha.
‘Are we going?’ DC Power appeared at the side of her desk and Sasha placed the phone to her shoulder. ‘One second, Craig.’
‘…think the worst of me, you always have, and maybe’ – Connie was already in full flow when Sasha resumed the call – ‘sometimes in the past, I’ve even deserved that distrust, but—’
‘Con,’ Sasha sighed. ‘It’s been one night.’
‘Yes, and I’m as surprised – so wonderfully, delightfully, romantically surprised – as you are, Sash. I know it’s been a long time since you’ve felt that way with Kev – after all, you’ve been together practically forever – but sometimes you just know straight away. This could be it.’
‘He’s my boss, Connie, and my friend.’
There was a meaningful pause on the other end, and then Connie said, ‘I understand.’
Sasha rubbed her eyes hard and when the undulating stars and shapes finally floated from her vision, she became aware that Craig was still standing beside her. ‘I’ve got to go, Con.’
‘See you tonight, darling,’ said Connie softly, and Sasha groaned inwardly at the thought of her sister and parents arriving at her house, but it was too late to cancel now. She killed the call and scribbled a note to remind Kev about the supermarket delivery arriving this afternoon, and maybe get him to pop to the shops if they needed more nibbles and wine. He’d know what to get – after all, they’d been together practically forever.
‘Everything alright?’ asked Craig.
Sasha rearranged her irritated expression into what she hoped was a dazzling smile. ‘Of course I am, Craig, everything’s just lovely. Are you ready?’
‘I was born ready,’ he said.
‘Right.’ She stood, eager to get out of the office and into the fresh air. ‘Let’s go, Power Man.’
