‘Go!’ he screamed at Sarah, and she fled into the darkness between the trees.

Abs held out a hand to help Jez up. But as soon as he was on his feet, Jez exploded in a furious rage, kicking and punching and gouging. Abs held up his arms, trying to block the angry blows, and somehow managed to kick him away. But Jez kept coming, arms and legs lashing out, and Abs staggered under the furious onslaught. Hunched over, cringing from the blows that rained down on him, he fell to the floor. He grabbed at the branch and swung it as hard as he could. The thick end of it cracked when it connected with the side of Jez’s head. He went flying through the air and fell in a heap.

‘Jez.’ Abs rushed over and knelt beside him, but his friend didn’t move. Oh my days, he thought, I’ve killed him!

But putting his fingers against Jez’s mouth, he felt soft breath. Searching frantically in Jez’s pockets for a mobile, he couldn’t find one.

He’d have to call an ambulance from the house – if he could even find the house in the dark. Abs began to run, crashing through the undergrowth in the dead of night.

‘You’ve asked a lot of questions, so now it’s my turn.’ Sasha wagged a finger at the guy. She was feeling quite pissed now, and had managed to push all thoughts of Rachel Weston and the investigation to the back of her mind. ‘What are you doing here on your own, anyway?’

‘Business conference.’ He stretched his arms across the back of the sofa, turning them so that she saw tendon and muscle roll beneath the skin. ‘I thought I’d treat myself and stay the night in one of the king-size beds they have here.’ He grinned. ‘And maybe meet a sophisticated lady.’

She nodded at the wedding ring he wore. ‘And where’s your wife?’

He rolled the ring around his finger. ‘Having fun, I hope.’

She shifted forward to interrogate him and when her bare knees touched his, she felt a crack of longing. She took his hand in hers. ‘And yet here you are, Ian.’

‘It’s Duncan,’ he told her.

She narrowed her eyes. ‘You said earlier your name was Ian.’

He made a face. ‘Did I?’

She dropped his hand. ‘Maybe you need to get your facts straight.’

He tapped a key card on the arm of the sofa and she felt her own heartbeat pound in her ears. ‘So I suppose that now you know I’m a total rotter, you won’t want to come upstairs with me.’

She shrugged, but didn’t rule it out. ‘But what would my husband say?’

He gazed at her. ‘I’m positive he’d very much want you to come to my room.’
