‘Good boy,’ she said, still feeling a nameless anxiety at leaving them both while she swanned off to a hotel to drink cocktails and enjoy a night of passionate love-making. Denny was going for a sleepover so he’d be okay, but she still didn’t like the idea of Angel being alone. She didn’t think anybody would break in and kidnap her, but she didn’t want her daughter to have a panic attack. And Sasha still didn’t discount the possibility that Angel intended to slip out to a bar, or sit in a park drinking cider with friends, or whatever it was teenagers did these days.
But then she saw Kev standing at the bottom of the stairs, looking very attractive as he ate a piece of toast, and remembered that they would at least enjoy a rare chance to reignite the slumbering fire of their relationship.
‘Break a leg in your interview,’ she told him, coming down.
‘Thank you,’ he said and leaned in to kiss her on the cheek. ‘I’ll get to the hotel as soon as I can.’
She pulled him closer and gently bit his earlobe to get him in the mood for tonight. ‘Looking forward to it,’ she whispered.
‘Yeah,’ said Kev, with a mouthful of toast and a distinct lack of passion. ‘So am I.’
And before she could say anything else, he turned away to get the kids organized for school. They were all talking at once. Angel was talking at Kev, Denny was talking at Angel, and Kev was talking at both of them, and nobody heard Sasha when she picked up the bag and said, ‘I’m off, then.’

Being on set again, feeling the buzz and excitement of a TV production, was like coming home for Abs, and he couldn’t wait to start filming.
Before the car arrived, he’d spent a lot of time picking out a hoodie, laying several on the bed because he couldn’t decide which one to wear – to the uneducated eye they all looked the same, but Abs knew better – and to make sure there were no creases or stains. Then he brushed his favourite white trainers until they were gleaming. He took a long shower, using a tangerine body scrub, and stood in front of the mirror for an hour, blow-drying his hair, and flossing and tweezing and concealing and applying lotions to his face, until his complexion glowed with health and vitality.
