‘We know you’re in there, Davey, we saw you go inside.’ Sasha banged her fist on the door as Craig walked around the caravan, calling for backup on his phone. ‘Please come out. You should know that more officers are on the way.’
Holidaymakers had gathered to watch, in shorts and tee-shirts and swimsuits, standing barefoot on the grass, drinking bottles of beer and licking ice creams. Someone was holding up a phone, filming the goings-on.
‘Don’t do that, please.’ Sasha pointed at the party in question. The last thing she needed was for the scene to be posted all over YouTube or whatever, particularly as she was looking very sweaty and bedraggled.
‘What’s going on?’ asked the woman from reception, walking towards her.
‘Whose caravan is this?’
‘It’s one of the ones we use to accommodate staff overnight,’ said the woman.
‘Gosling uses it?’
‘He’ll have access, yes.’
Craig came over, putting away his phone. ‘Help’s on its way.’
‘Do you hear that, Davey?’ Sasha shouted at the door. ‘There’s no way out, so why don’t you just come out?’
But there was no response from inside and Sasha looked questioningly at Craig.
‘I saw him run in there.’ He pressed one hand against the metal surround of the door. ‘I could probably get this door open easily enough. All it’ll take is one good kick.’
‘You’ll break your ankle.’ Sasha told him. ‘Let’s wait till we have more bodies on the scene.’
‘You can’t break down the door,’ said the woman. ‘That’s private property.’
Sasha held out her hand. ‘Do you have a key?’
‘I don’t have the authority to give you a key,’ said the woman.
‘The person we believe is inside—’
‘He is inside,’ Craig insisted.
‘Is wanted for questioning about the murder of one man and the abduction of another.’ Sasha clawed back her fringe in the unbearable midday sun. ‘So you talk to whoever you have to, get a spare from the office. Or we can get a key off Gosling, or force entry. Either way, as soon as we have more bodies here, we’re going inside that caravan.’
‘The park owners will be livid.’
‘And we’re probably going to have to search all these caravans,’ Sasha told her, in no mood for games.
‘What?’ The woman was shocked. ‘It’s the height of the season, there are hundreds of people staying here, you can’t just search everyone’s caravan.’
