‘Yeah, I’m going back to Laid In Essex!’ He grinned, but the smile died on his face when he thought about what might happen to him. ‘But what if he tries again to murder me? What if this Jenkins fella decides to finish the job? I need police protection.’
Now it was the detective’s turn to blow out her cheeks. ‘I’m afraid we don’t have the resources to provide round-the-clock protection, but we can give you the best possible advice about taking the necessary precautions. We’ve identified suspects and that gives us the opportunity to find them quickly.’ She tapped a plastic pen, one of those ones with a hole in the middle, against her chin. ‘So Rhiannon Jenkins went missing three years ago.’
Abs thought he was going to burst with frustration; he didn’t understand why he kept having to talk about what happened in Wales. He was a normal guy, a nice guy, a lovable guy, and he wasn’t equipped to deal with… the truth. He didn’t know anything about culture or politics or climate change, he was happy being himself, being Abs, and conversations about serious stuff like… the truth and facts made him confused and fearful.
He’d spent three long years trying not to think about that terrible night, and about his part in it, and he didn’t want to keep getting reminded about it.
Not now, not ever.
Abs shoved his hands back beneath his thighs to stop them shaking. ‘Yeah, so?’
‘Why now?’ Sasha shrugged. ‘Why wait three years to get revenge?
‘That necklace is beautiful,’ he told her. ‘It really suits you.’
Sasha’s hand drifted to the chain around her neck and she smiled, and it made him stupidly happy because he liked to make other people happy, and maybe it would stop her talking about that effing night.
‘Thank you,’ she said. ‘Why didn’t you report the attack on you last night, Abs?’
‘I don’t know,’ he said miserably. ‘I was in shock, confused. I’m always confused, to be honest.’
He laughed, playing up to his image of a happy chappy who was always a bit out of his depth, and the thought made him laugh even harder, because right now he was so out of his depth that it wasn’t even funny.
And the detective called Sasha smiled gently as she watched him laughing. And Abs didn’t like the look of that smile at all, not one little bit.
