“They are. But these fighters use their weaknesses to fuel excellence. They will be warriors because they must. The only question that remains is whether they can lead. Together.”

“And the fourth? You didn’t mention Johnis. Or is his weakness that he’s simply not qualified?”

“He’s the one who will bring the rest together or die trying.”

Only he and Rachelle knew about the prophecy concerning the chosen child who would prove himself and save them all.

Today Thomas had found the child. His name was Johnis.

“You’re probably right,” Mikil said with a sigh. “The sun sets in two hours. They still have plenty of time.”

“It’s dark in three hours,” Thomas said. “They have enough time to take a nap along the way.”

“Unless—”

“Enough.” Thomas lifted his hand. “There won’t be an unless. How many of the Guard are pitched in the Eastern Forest?”

“All ten thousand. Leaving the rest of the forests unprotected, including the western flank, where you’ve sent the four new recruits.”

“You’re saying that we have a reason to doubt our scouts? There are enough tents out in the east to house an army of two hundred thousand Horde. That’s an illusion?”

“Not my point, sir.” Mikil said. “I’m just worried about the four you sent off alone. We hardly have enough Guard to mount a rescue if they did run into trouble.”

Thomas nodded but held his jaw firm. He knew that sending them off so close to a major battle wasn’t entirely sane. But he also knew that one of those four had been chosen. Perhaps he had to know. Perhaps he’d intentionally sent Johnis off with three scrappers, knowing that he would be tested.

“As I said, I have my reasons,” he said. “What worries me more is the battle we will throw them into when they return.” He sighed. “I want you to take the thousand new recruits to the eastern flank at first light with all the resin from our reserves. They can help finish the trenches and pour the resin. When the battle comes, they will man the torches and spring the traps. I don’t want them in battle this time. It’s too early.”

He’d come up with the notion of digging deep trenches in the sand and filling them with flammable resin from the nanka tree. The Horde would ride their horses into a firestorm, if it worked as well as he hoped.

Mikil’s eyes twinkled. “That’s”—she hesitated—“a good idea, sir. The recruits are too raw to fight.”

“No, you’re wrong,” he said, walking out of the gazebo. “They’re not too young. But I can’t bear the thought of any dying so soon.”
