“Now! Find my son! You sent him out, you bring him back. For Elyon’s sake, don’t just stand here!”

“Please remember who you’re talking to,” Mikil snapped.

Ramos caught himself, took a deep breath, and settled down. “Forgive me. I lost myself. But they will be okay, you think.”

“I think they’re probably struggling with four large catalina cacti right now, arguing over whose fault it is that they dropped one,” Thomas said.

A crooked grin split the man’s face. “That would be them. Not Johnis, but the others. Thank you, sir.” He dipped his head. “And forgive my indiscretion.” He took Thomas’s hand, bowed to it, then hurried off into the night. “It’s okay,” Thomas could hear Ramos say to someone. “They’re on the way back.”

He turned away and faced the dark lake.

“What do we do?” Mikil asked.

“We go after them.”

Mikil stepped up and lowered her arms. “The Horde is gathered and ready to march on the east. We can’t compromise our defenses on account of four recruits.”

“We go after them!” Thomas whispered harshly. “These are not just any four recruits.”

Surely Mikil knows there is no sense arguing with Thomas when it comes to matters of loyalty, Rachelle thought. Then again, she is fairly new in her promotion.

“I remember rescuing you once, when you were left with a spear in your side,” Thomas said to Mikil in a low voice.

That stopped her short. She dipped her head. “Forgive me. I’m indebted to you always.”

“Gather one hundred of our best fighters,” Thomas said. “We leave within the hour.”

Stop!” Darsal cried. Her voice rang out over the desert dunes. “For Elyon’s mad love, stop this!”

Johnis eased the reins back and faced her. A round, red moon that gave little light hung large over her head. Silvie pulled up just in front of her.

Darsal lowered her voice. “For the last time, I really do think we should reconsider this,” she said, glancing around at the empty dunes.

The desert air was quiet. No Horde, no Shataiki, no lizards, nothing but them and their horses. But they all knew nothing could be farther from the truth. The forests had disappeared from sight an hour ago, and Johnis’s courage had begun to fade as well.

“You can’t possibly think that this makes any sense,” Darsal said. She seemed to have changed without Billos by her side. Her eyes moved nervously, and she repeatedly scanned the dark desert, not for Horde but for Billos, if Johnis guessed correctly. It made him wonder what had created this bond they shared.

“You chose to follow me,” he said. “And if you like, you can choose to turn back now.”

“I came because the Horde were climbing up our backside and Billos was taken,” Darsal snapped. “What did you expect from me under such pressure?”
