He picked up the book, wrapped it tightly, and shoved it back into his saddlebag. Whatever happened, he knew now that he had to protect this book at all costs.
“We have to give the stallions water,” he said. “They won’t make it long.”
He watched Silvie struggle to her feet, amazed at the disease’s progression through the night. What have I done? I’m the supreme commander of utter fools, and now we will all pay.
The desert rose with small dunes to the north, he saw. “Maybe they’ve sent out a search party.” But he knew this was only more fool’s talk. Better to head north, into those dunes he’d dreamed about.
Johnis was slipping the book into his saddlebag when suddenly the dots connected in his mind. Dunes to the north? Just as he’d dreamed!
His pulse suddenly pounded in his ears. “Fellows?”
They didn’t even look at him.
“Girls, I think I may know where we can find water,” he said.
“I hope you drown in your fantasies of water,” Darsal rasped.
“But you see those dunes?” He pointed north. “I dreamed that those dunes were there, and I met a man who told me Summerville was there. There’s water in Summerville.”
Silvie moved painfully, watering her horse from her canteen, still refusing to look at him. “Fine, Johnis,” she said. “Lead us to our deaths. Why stop now?”
“You’ll follow me?”
“Into hell, remember?”
He gave his horse the rest of his water, then managed to mount despite his hurting flesh. “Okay, follow me.”
In reality he had no clue what they’d find. Dunes, he could see that much. But the idea of water being there did seem like a fantasy.
They trudged through the desert, over the dunes. Nothing. So maybe he had been wrong.
They crested the fifth dune and pulled up.
There, in the valley below, a pond of sweet blue water shone in the rising sun, bordered by several tall palm trees and some large cacti. Catalina cacti.
“Water,” Silvie said, staring dumbly.
A painful grin split Johnis’s face. “Water.”

They took off, leaving Darsal gaping in their dust, then flogging her horse to catch them.
Ahead a white head poked up from the bush, then dove into the pond and disappeared.
“Did you see that?” Johnis cried. “A Roush.”
“See what?”
So they still weren’t seeing. But they had found water.
Darsal caught them before they reached the pond, and all three rolled from their horses in pain, landed on the sandy shore, and flung themselves into the glistening water.
The question now was, what kind of water? There was the drinking variety found in many streams throughout the forests, and the lake variety found in only the one lake at the center of each forest.
Was this water Elyon’s?
