Evidently unbothered by his sucking and fussing, whoever had come slowly lifted the pole he was bound to off the ground. He hung from his wrists and ankles, like a sack of taro root.
And then they were moving. Through the tent wall.
Through the Horde camp.
Into the desert.
Into the night.

DAY TWO
Johnis woke to a buzzing fly near his ear and the blazing sun in his eye. Without moving from his back, he gazed slowly about the camp.
His stallion stood black against the pale desert, still tied to his ankle. The horse will need water, and soon, he thought. But Billos’s horse had been carrying the extra water jug. They each had a large canteen of lake water to either drink or bathe with, but that wouldn’t last the day.
It was said that the skin disease came on so quickly in part because of the dry desert heat.
Silvie stood by her brown stallion, cinching up her saddle. The sun shone through her short blond hair, giving her a glow that reminded Johnis of a gardenia blossom. As he looked at Silvie now, working with strong arms, her smooth jaw flexing—she was stunning.
“You’ll want a kind woman with spirit,” his father had often advised him. “Beauty is in a woman’s words as much as in her skin.” Johnis moved his eyes to Darsal’s horse. But Darsal’s horse wasn’t where it had been last night. He sat up and looked about.
“Where’s Darsal?” he demanded, seeing no sign of her.
Silvie gave her saddle cinch one last tug. “I don’t know. She was gone when I woke.”
“Gone?” Johnis jumped to his feet. “What do you mean, gone?”
“I mean, as in not here. Her tracks lead that way.” She nodded at the rising sun. East. Home.
“She just left us?”
“Evidently. What did you expect, kisses in the morning?”
“No, but she can’t just up and leave.”
“But she can and did,” Silvie said, drilling him with her bright blue eyes. “And don’t think I’m not considering the same.”
Johnis felt his heart fall into the pit of his stomach. “Then everything will be lost. You can’t!”
“Why, because we have to save the world? Find these lost books of yours?”
“Forget saving the world,” Johnis snapped. “I don’t care about saving the world either, believe me. And they’re not my books. But by leaving us, Darsal has put herself in terrible trouble. You heard what the Roush said about Billos. And he was taken. You don’t think the Horde are waiting back there for Darsal?”
