Rachelle stepped up to Johnis and studied him, smiling gently. She took his chin in her hand and turned his face, as Thomas had done.
“He’s right, you know,” she said. “You’re a born leader. The world will turn on you. You are chosen.”
Johnis was about to step forward and accept when she continued.
“You do realize that the girls will fall in line to marry you now, don’t you?” She winked. “I recommend you trust my husband. Everything he’s done, he’s done for your good. There is no one I know who has better judgment than Thomas.”
Johnis felt short of breath. He stepped forward on legs that felt not entirely there.
“Will you?” Thomas asked again.
Johnis walked out to the supreme leader, kissed the handle of the sword that still jutted from the earth, and bowed. “I will.”
Again it was Johnis’s father who cried out first, but this time with a hoarse voice from all of his yelling earlier. Five thousand strong stood to their feet and roared at the sky, then began to stomp the earth so that it shook.
Thomas let them roar for a full minute, while Johnis stood quietly, head bowed, unsure of what they expected from him or what the other three thought of him.
When the cheers quieted, he lifted his head and saw that Thomas had raised his sword. Eyes on him.
“To receive your commission, you will arm yourselves and ride on four of our fastest horses directly west to the Igal point. There you will retrieve a group of four marked catalina cacti at the forest’s edge and return them by nightfall without breaking a single needle.”
“Four?” Billos said. “They’re too large.”
Thomas shot him a glare. “That, lad, is the point. You’ll have to use your heads and work as a team.”
“What about the Horde?” Johnis asked.
“Well, you can’t very well love them to death, can you, Johnis?” Thomas grinned. “I wouldn’t be too concerned—our reports have them to the east. You’re headed west, young man. If you’re lucky enough to run into a straggler or two, bring me more hair for my football.”
The fighters chuckled, but Johnis found no reason to join them.
“The sun is sinking. I suggest you get your bruised bodies to the stables and fly like the wind. It’s a two-hour ride from here.” Thomas spread his arms and turned in a circle, addressing the crowd. “Send them off, lovers of Elyon. Tell them they will not give their lives in vain!”
And they did, though Johnis couldn’t actually understand the jumbled cries of encouragement beating against his ears.
No one noticed the hooded man slipping discreetly from the stadium’s southern entrance. He hurried into the forest, mounted a black steed that was awaiting him, and pounded into the shadows.
Toward the desert.
Toward the Horde.
