Ramos marched to the edge and stared out at the desert canyons. “Then we go after them. We mount an expedition this moment.”
“There’s nothing I would like better,” Thomas said. “Their water was found on a horse.” He walked up and looked at the pale desert with Ramos. “Even if we left now, we wouldn’t find them before the disease—”
“No!” Ramos roared, knocking Thomas’s hand aside. “No! We go now. He’s out there, you hear me? My boy is out there, and I will not allow him to die or turn into one of those filthy beasts!”
William walked forward. “Ramos, we are gathering for battle.”
Ramos broke then, standing on the cliff next to Thomas. His red face twisted in rage, and spittle flew from his mouth with each word. “Are you all cowards?” he screamed at Thomas. “You sent him to his death! He’s a boy, just a boy with a Horde ball who felt compelled by his mother’s death to cross your foolish line! He doesn’t deserve to be deserted!”
Thomas gently motioned William back and let the man have his emotions. “I’m sorry, Ramos. My heart breaks with yours. But the forests are at stake.”
“So is my son!”
He snatched his sword in panic and started for his horse, but Thomas grabbed him by the shoulder.
“You can’t go after him, Ramos.”
He spun back, tears wet in his eyes. “They killed my wife! Now you say I should let them take my son?”
“And if you go after Johnis, your daughter will be without a father.”
His words stopped the man cold. They all knew there was nothing one man or ten men or a hundred men could do to save one who’d gone into the desert without water. The number of men who’d lost their lives trying could hardly be counted.
Ramos’s lips began to tremble. Tears leaked silently down his cheek.
“You can’t find him, Ramos,” Thomas said gently. “But don’t give up hope. Johnis is a very special boy. This is not over, I promise you.”
The man whirled around, leaped onto his horse, and spurred it toward the forest. Without a word he thundered away.
“He’s a sergeant?” Thomas asked.
“Yes, sir.”
“Now he’s a captain,” he said. “See that he gets his honors.”

The three lost recruits lay in the cool desert night, snoring and occasionally groaning as disease overtook body and mind.
The body would still function well enough, but with pain and revolting smells obvious to all but those who were afflicted by it.
The mind would also function well enough, but with a limited capacity to appreciate a disease-free state of living.
