“The bats must have blown it. Billos is free,” she said. Then she started to cry because she knew what a horrible failure she was. And still this boy beside her didn’t think about himself, but Billos. Billos, who’d mocked him at every turn!

Like a million insects, the Shataiki began to flitter and click their nasty tongues. Teeleh stepped into Silvie’s view from behind the wheel, red eyes unchanged.

Without explaining himself, he clumped slowly over to Silvie, wings dragging behind like a tattered black wedding dress. He brought his snout close to her face and licked her cheek with his long pink tongue. The sick smell of decayed meat from his mouth made her tremble.

“Human,” he breathed. “Do you love this human?”

“Get back,” Johnis cried, but the sound came out in a hoarse rasp.

Teeleh ignored him and spoke to Silvie. “The kind of pain you are about to feel cannot be described,” he said. “It’s a pain reserved for the Horde when they die. But if you let your mind go, I think you could grow to like it.”

Silvie’s bones began to shake. She sagged in her ropes and begged Elyon to allow her to die.

Sobbing sounded on her right. Beside her, Johnis was crying. His head lolled to one side, and his face was twisted in anguish, tears streaming down his cheeks. Their rock, this boy who didn’t seem to know fear, was breaking.

“I’m sorry, Silvie,” he whispered. Then louder, moaning with a breaking heart: “Forgive me! I’m so sorry! Please, please don’t hurt her!”

Teeleh struck him in the face without looking his way.

Then his claw was on Silvie’s cheek, tracing her jaw. “It’s a new kind of pain,” he said. “One that starts in the soul and works its way to the bones, setting them on fire. It can be done in the spine, but I prefer to do it through the neck.” He drew his fingernail down past her ear.

“Stop it,” Johnis whispered. “Stop it.”

“Only you can stop it, boy,” Teeleh said. His fingernail pressed into Silvie’s skin, and she felt fire burn down her spine.

Silvie screamed.

And so did Johnis. Only his scream came with words.

“I’ll tell you!” he cried. “I’ll tell you. Along the path, forty-nine trees from the edge, seven trees to the left! At the base of a tree!”

Teeleh froze. Silvie’s world was swimming already, but she clung to consciousness, realizing that something terrible had just happened.

The beast stepped back. Nodded. A hundred bats took flight in search of the book. And they would find it, Silvie knew.

Beside her Johnis hung his head and sobbed.
