“Bah! I don’t care about your spells and magic. We know from the traitor that none of their attempts at magic work.” Qurong clubbed his chair, breaking the spindles that had been crudely fixed as a backrest.

The priest was a sly, wicked snake. His days would end with the swing of a sword.

“I wouldn’t dismiss Teeleh’s power so easily,” the priest said. “Your whole point is to capture the marked one because he can lead us to the missing books.”

“I want the boy only because of their superstitions, not mine. Thomas Hunter believes the boy will save them. Do you think he called up so many young to send them off to die? No, he was looking for the promised one, and now he thinks he’s found him. Killing the boy will crush Thomas.”

The high priest drilled him with a dark stare and held his gaze the way he often did. “Then you don’t believe finding the seven lost Books of History will give us an advantage?”

“Did I say that?” Qurong turned from the man’s crushing glare. “Show me Teeleh and I will give him my soul and find the rest of the books. But for now we fight with flesh and blood, not spells and magic.”

“If I’m not mistaken, you have given him your soul,” the priest said softly.

Qurong turned away. “It doesn’t matter; we’ll have these four saplings in the canyons. Send another five hundred men. If the recruits escape now, they will inform the forests that we have elite fighters on the west side. That devil Thomas will know we’ve fooled them with this show of force on the east.”

FOUR HOURS’ RIDE DUE WEST FROM WHERE QURONG’S LARGE camp hid in the desert valley, Thomas paced in one of the gazebos that overlooked the lake. Mikil, the woman he’d promoted after Justin’s recent defection, stood by the railing, watching several hundred who’d already gathered at the lake for the night’s celebration.

“We should have sent spies at least,” she said. “Someone to watch over them and report back.”

“I have my reasons for sending them alone,” Thomas shot back. “They’re meant to be tested, not pampered.”

“Those four are bound to tear each other apart. Or at least tear Johnis apart.” She shook her head. “They’re a wounded lot. I hope you know who you picked.”

“I picked the four strongest candidates. You have Billos, the tempestuous bulldog who swings first and asks later; Darsal, battered and insecure inside but covers it with enough boldness to take on a whole squad on the outside; Silvie, who is the smartest recruit in the field with a burning revenge that will drive her to the end.”

“Those sound like weaknesses,” Mikil said.
