She lowered her bloody finger onto the leather cover. A hole large enough for any human to enter parted the air above her, buzzing with power. Darsal gasped. Her ears filled with the terrifying groan made by the dark, distorted figure beyond, who now beckoned her with his hand. She reached out. Touched the hole. Felt heat swim up her arm.

She was on her back, so she couldn’t step in. But she didn’t need to, because the gateway began to move toward her. Swallowing first her hand, then her arm. Darsal began to shake.

“Billos,” she muttered.

The last thing she remembered was the sight of Karas diving through the air and grabbing her foot. Then her world went black.

EIGHTEEN

Billos considered the two guiding objectives of this mission that Marsuvees Black had sent him on: to practice his already crafted power and to find the books.

He stood with legs spread, understanding his situation perfectly. He’d strolled into the village of Paradise with a tentative grasp of his own skill, engaged the enemy, and overcome six of them with ridiculous ease.

But then, nothing less was expected of him—he was Billos of Southern, traveler of the books, wielder of the gun, born and bred to be master of all he put his hand to. This first test had been child’s play.

The voices yelled outside, nearer now. This second attack wouldn’t be nearly as easy.

To get the books first or to kill them, that was the question that stalled Billos perhaps a moment too long.

Books, he decided. The books harness a way of escape. But boots were already pounding on the steps just outside.

He dove to the base of the counter and rolled behind it. Scrambling like a crab over Steve’s prone body, he snatched up the long gun with twin tubes that lay beside his slain prey.

The door crashed open. “Steve!”

Billos breathed steadily, measuring his time. The books sat on the shelf above him. He would rise, unload some suhupow into the man at the door, snatch the books, and make for the back door he could see just beyond the counter. Once outside, he would regroup and plot his attack on the rest of the village.

“Get Claude!” the voice cried. “We have a shooting here! Jerry’s been shot! Call the station in Delta. Get the cops up here, for goodness’ sake, hurry!”

Cops. The man had named Billos’s enemy. “Imposters,” Black had said. But he had yet to meet someone pretending to be someone else. His mission was far from over.

The man spoke low, aiming his verbal taunting at Billos now. “Listen to me, you—”

Billos rose while the man was full of his threat. He whipped the twin-tubed firing stick at the door and jerked both levers back.

Ba-boom!
