‘Yes, I know.’ Searching for a motive for Victor’s actions was exhausting and worrying. He couldn’t simply have walked in and left the tablets, he had to have planned it. And to what end? And having gone to all that trouble, was he going to give up? Jodie caught Rivka’s worried expression and shook her head. ‘Anyway, let’s forget about him, I’ve much more exciting news to tell you.’ She reached for her glass of sparkling mineral water and took a mouthful. ‘I asked Flynn to move in with me.’
Luckily, Rivka had put her wine down. No choking this time, instead a shake of her head, eyes wide in disbelief. ‘You did what? Are you crazy? Flynn who lied to you, who you were blaming for all your problems just three days ago. That guy?’
‘He called around. We had a long talk, he explained everything.’ Jodie’s eyes softened. ‘He’s really so sweet and by the end of the night, we were closer than ever. Sometimes,’ she said, ‘you know when it’s right.’ Rivka refused to meet her eyes, her mouth a tight line and Jodie sighed. ‘You haven’t met him yet, but when you do, you’ll understand. We have this…’ She searched for a word that didn’t sound crazy. ‘Chemistry, I suppose you’d call it.’
‘Lust,’ her friend said, meeting her gaze at last and picking up her glass with a shake of her head.
Jodie frowned. ‘No, it’s not. Yes, he is a wonderful lover but it’s not that. We gel. I’ve never felt this way about someone.’ She waited a beat. ‘I think I might be in love with him.’
It was Rivka’s turn to frown. She put her glass down and leaned closer. ‘I’ve known you a long time and I’ve never seen you do something so crazy. You were always the sensible one. Remember when I wanted to go off to a kibbutz with that junior doctor I met?’
Jodie laughed. ‘Oh, do I remember! You had this romantic idea of what it would be like until I told you that you had to help out with everything and hand over any money you earned. You went off the idea pretty quickly.’
‘I’m returning the favour. You barely know this guy. He’s already lied to you.’ Rivka picked up her glass and drained it, then raised a hand to the hovering waiter and ordered another. ‘I probably should have ordered a bottle,’ she said with a smile. ‘I’m having a lazy day, and meeting Tasha for dinner tonight.’ Her smile faded. ‘Seriously, Jodie, it isn’t that long since you were convinced Flynn was to blame for sending you those packages and somehow involved in that medication fiasco.’
‘I was wrong. We had a long talk. He was horrified that I would think that of him.’
