Alcohol was making her maudlin. For goodness’ sake, she’d only known the guy a couple of weeks and, as it turned out, it appeared she didn’t know him at all. In a few days, he’d have faded like a bad dream.

The idea of taking a position as a sales rep was daft anyway. She was a nurse. She’d apply for that part-time job, be cleared by the NMC, and get on with her life.

Her phone was sitting on the counter. Her eyes flicked to it. What had Flynn said when he’d rung? Maybe he’d guessed that she knew about his lies and his messages would be littered with excuses. It was tempting to reach for it and switch it on to listen. But she’d had enough for one day.

Leaving it where it was, she took herself upstairs and, still in her interview-appropriate clothes, she lay down on her bed and shut her eyes.

Victor was puzzled. He’d followed Jodie to the office in Ealing. Her expression was bright, excited even on her way in, but less than twenty minutes later a different woman came out. One with the weight of the world pressing her into the pavement. Every step appeared to be a struggle.

Victor guessed the visit was linked to her attendance at the recruitment office the day before. Perhaps she was considering a change of job. But if her expression was anything to go on, her visit hadn’t been a success.

Back in Gravesend, she went inside her home and didn’t come out. There had been no sign of lover boy since Monday morning, it might be that he was due that night. Victor would go home and return to his usual spot around 6.15pm and keep watch.

He wasn’t sure of his next step. If he were being honest with himself, which wasn’t one of his strengths, he’d admit that finding Jodie – following her and learning everything about her – had initially been pure curiosity. But it had grown into an obsession.

They’d labelled him a rapist but it wasn’t true. Back then, when he was a gawky twenty-eight-year-old, he found his peers difficult to communicate with. But young girls listened to him, admired him, made him feel good about himself so it was no wonder he’d gravitated towards them.
