‘Good, you need to rest after those two long days.’ Flynn drained his coffee, got to his feet and checked the time. ‘Better get going. I should be home around six.’ He put his plate and mug in the dishwasher and reached for his coat, pulling it on as he leaned in again to give her a kiss, this time a lingering one on her lips.

Jodie reached a hand up and lay it on his cheek. ‘Don’t work too hard. I’ll have dinner ready when you get home. I might surprise you and do something special.’ She laughed and whacked him across the arm when he mimed vomiting. ‘Cheeky! I can cook.’

‘Of course you can.’ He grinned. ‘I might get a McDonald’s on the way home all the same.’

He was still laughing at his own joke as he walked down the street, turning every few steps to look back and wave at her as she stood in the doorway, waving him off.

Her smile faded as she returned to the kitchen. The nausea had completely subsided so she made a slice of toast and a mug of coffee and sat looking out at the garden. Garden… it was a yard, only a few feet across. Not enough space for a child to play.

A child! Her second chance. A brother… or sister… for the man who was probably strolling on Bondi beach, maybe with his girlfriend… maybe with his own child. The thought tugged at her heart. All she’d missed out on.

She put her coffee down and rubbed her hands over her belly. If, as she’d guessed, it had happened that night, it was a little over four weeks ago. Early days. Anything could happen. Her hands rested on her flat stomach. No. Nothing was going to happen. She was going to have this baby. A child with a man she loved. A second chance. She deserved it.

She wanted it.

Victor had only been gone two weeks and Jodie had changed everything. It took him over a week to establish for certain that Flynn was living full-time with her. She’d let him into her home… and into her bed.

It was time she realised that he wasn’t the man for her. Victor’s thin lips twisted in a sneer. He was lying in his favourite thinking place, stretched out on the bed, hands clasped behind his head. He was done with hanging stuff on her door – it was time to confront Jodie, to tell her what he was sure she knew in her heart.
