Jodie cleared her throat. ‘Actually, I don’t need to give any.’ She kept her head down as she told her tale, reluctant to see disappointment cross his face. When she finished, she looked up, expecting to hear him offer his regrets that he couldn’t continue.
Instead, Bisby shrugged. ‘I used to be a nurse,’ he said, surprising her. ‘I know what the NMC is like. It might be better if you were a registered nurse, but it’s not essential. Your contacts, to be honest, are more valuable.’ He waited a beat. ‘Assuming, of course, that the police weren’t involved?’
‘No!’
He held a hand up. ‘No offence intended.’ He pulled a keyboard closer and tapped. ‘Right, how about tomorrow at midday?’
Jodie looked at him blankly.
‘For an interview with the company? If they’re interested, which I’m sure they will be.’
This was all happening too fast. Jodie had always hated rollercoasters, the sensation of the world falling away beneath her feet, the heart-in-your-mouth feeling, the being out of control. A little over a week ago, her life was solid. Now it was vapour.
‘Tomorrow at midday.’
‘Great,’ Bisby said, taking her words as assent. ‘Let me get on to them and see if I can get that set up.’
Mesmerised, Jodie listened to him speak about her, hardly recognising the description he was giving to whoever was listening on the other end.
‘Great, she’ll be there.’ Bisby hung up with a grin splitting his round face. ‘That’s all set. Graham is looking forward to meeting you, he said you sounded like what they needed.’
And that was it. Bisby gave her a slim folder with information about the company. ‘Have a read of that. They may ask what you think of the company, what you know about them. It’s good to have answers ready, okay?’
She took the folder. ‘Thank you.’
‘I’ll be in touch tomorrow afternoon. They don’t hang about making decisions.’ Bisby got to his feet and stretched across the desk to take her hand. ‘It’s the biggest pharmaceutical company in the city so it would be an excellent opportunity for you. Best of luck with it.’
It wasn’t until Jodie was on the train back to Gravesend that she opened the folder. There were several pages, some with diagrams of sales figures, market share, potential expansion, some detailing the structure of the company.
The company. The name made Jodie’s head spin.
London Medical. The pharmaceutical company where Flynn worked.

Jodie swore under her breath. It couldn’t be the same company. She fished in her bag for the card Flynn had given her and took it out. A simple matt black card with his name in large letters across the top, his mobile number underneath and stretched across the bottom… London Medical.
