‘If you’re sure.’ Rivka didn’t seem quite convinced. ‘Ring me if you hear anything or if you want to chat, okay? I’m here for you. And keep your chin up, you’re a brilliant nurse, remember that.’

‘Thanks, that’s what I needed to hear.’ Jodie hung up with a smile that faded as she picked up her mobile and did an internet search for the RCN phone number.

Her union was as efficient and supportive as she’d expected. They assured her that if she wanted a rep to attend the investigative meeting with her, one would be provided and spoke about it as if it was all routine. Perhaps it was to them, but to Jodie it was a horrifying nightmare. She was always so sure of herself, of her competence. Now that was being called into question and even though she knew she’d done nothing wrong… doubts were beginning to creep in. She had been overworked, stretched too much, she knew corners were being cut… had she made a mistake?

Weighed down by worry, she sat in a daze for several minutes, then picked up her phone and sent Flynn a text.

Are you free for a chat?

She held the phone in her hand, hoping for a reply and when it came, she drew a shuddering breath.

Give me five minutes

True to his word, five minutes later, her phone buzzed and she heard Flynn’s deep, steady voice saying hello and suddenly her worries were a little less frightening.

‘Hi,’ she said. ‘I hope I didn’t drag you away from anything important.’

‘No, it’s fine. You okay? You’re not cancelling tomorrow, I hope.’

‘No, it’s not that.’ Now that she was speaking to him, she wasn’t sure why she’d rung. What did she expect him to say? He wouldn’t understand anyway. ‘I’m having a bad day, work-wise and wanted to hear a friendly voice.’ It wasn’t exactly the truth, but it wasn’t a lie either.

‘Oh, poor you.’ His quick sympathy brought a lump to her throat. This had been a bad idea, she was going to start bawling any moment.

‘I’ll tell you all about it when I see you tomorrow. I’d better go, thanks for getting back to me, that was all I needed. Bye.’ She hung up, but she didn’t bawl. Flynn Douglas was good for her. A brief chat with him had done what the conversation with her union had failed to do, it had given her back her belief in herself.

She’d done nothing wrong. When she went to the meeting with Katy and the human resources manager, she’d prove it.
