He didn’t ask if she wanted to come, and he never would again. The crack she’d felt opening under her feet hours before widened, and she felt herself slipping inside. They’d never walk hand in hand to the Italian restaurant again, never stop to kiss, just because. Never lay naked together, hot and sweaty after making love for hours and talk about their future.

Her hands tightened over her belly. What was she to do about her baby? This child of her child.

Struggling in the deep dark pit she found herself in, she had absolutely no idea.

Flynn never returned that night. Jodie cried as the happy future she’d planned turned to vapour around her before vanishing like a mist of warm breath on a cold day. The shock of the unbelievable disclosure had numbed her; but the piercing pain of facing the truth would come.

Before she went to bed, she did an internet search and ordered a DNA kit. She had to be sure.

The following day, she worked a twelve-hour shift and returned home a little after 8.15pm, weary in body and mind, tight bands of tension around her head and her chest. She’d sent Flynn a few messages during the day, but she’d heard nothing from him. When she turned the corner into Wilfred Street and saw the house in darkness, her steps slowed almost to a halt. But reality had to be faced. Even with the piercing pain in her chest and in her belly, as if the baby she carried felt the same agony of loss, she had to know.

The pain faded to a deadly heavy ache as Jodie walked from room to room, past tears. Flynn had been in while she was at work. He’d not taken everything… his suits still filled the new wardrobe… but all his other stuff was gone. She filled a glass with water and sat at the table.

It was several minutes before she noticed the note propped against the kettle but she felt no inclination to jump up and grab it. What could it say, after all? There was no way back from this.

Eventually, she stood and picked it up. She unfolded it, smoothing out the creases with one hand while she tried to read the words through tear-filled eyes.

From the first moment I saw you, I felt this amazing connection. I put it down to some romantic notion of love at first sight but I know now it was something more… I think you feel it too. It’s best if we don’t meet… for a while anyway. Send me whatever I need to do for the DNA test and I’ll do it. When we know, for sure, it will be easier.
