The pharmacy, part of a chain, was big and busy. It wasn’t somewhere she normally shopped and she’d no idea where to locate what she wanted. Unwilling to ask the heavily made-up young woman who was straightening a display of luridly coloured nail varnish, Jodie wandered up and down the aisles until she found what she was looking for.

Twenty minutes later, she was back at home reading the instructions and a mere five minutes after that, she was squealing with joy. She’d known she was right, but looking at the confirmation in her hand, she couldn’t help a grin of pleasure. This time it was perfect. She was going to have a child with a man she loved.

Her second chance.

Nothing was going to mess this up.

Excited though she was, Jodie didn’t tell Flynn that evening, or the next. It was too early both in terms of their relationship and in the pregnancy. This early she could easily lose the baby. This early, their relationship might yet founder.

For the moment, she kept her exciting news to herself.

Over the next few days, she watched for Victor’s face in the crowd. But if he were there, he was staying well hidden. It didn’t stop Jodie searching, her eyes darting left and right as she walked on a busy street or through the train station.

Five days after she’d called to his bedsit, she began to hope that that particular nightmare was over.

It was the sixth day, a day when she wasn’t working, that she came down shortly after Flynn had left to find an envelope on the hall mat. She didn’t have to pick it up to know who it was from and a jolt of anger shot through her. Victor had lulled her into thinking she’d won, that he’d run away with his tail between his legs but it was obviously part of his plan to unsettle and weaken her.

She’d warned him, hadn’t she?

Her mobile was beside her bed, she turned to go back up for it. She’d ring the police. Get them to do their job.

Halfway up, she gave a grunt of frustration and returned to the hallway. The police would want to know everything. She’d have to tell them she’d visited his bedsit. How would they view that? Visiting the bedsit of a man she’d accused of statutory rape all those years ago. They’d think it a bit strange. Hell, she thought it a bit strange. What had she been thinking?

She scooped the letter up and took it with her to the kitchen, leaving it on the table while she made coffee.
