Doyle shut the door behind him. ‘Just a courtesy call. We spoke to Flynn Douglas. He insists he is innocent of any wrongdoing pertaining to the packages left on your door. He did admit to impersonating a sales rep but as this appeared to be done with no criminal intent, we’re not following that up.’ He waited for a comment and when Jodie simply nodded, he continued. ‘Have you had any further packages?’

‘No, there’s been nothing. Perhaps whoever was doing it, has moved on to getting his kicks elsewhere.’

‘Perhaps.’ Doyle’s tone of voice was cautious. ‘If you do receive more though, don’t open them, contact us immediately and we’ll be out. As for Douglas, we gave him quite a scare, I don’t think he’ll be bothering you again.’

‘Thank you, and for coming to let me know. That was kind.’ Jodie kept the genial expression in place until after the officer had left and she saw their car pulling away. Then she shut the door and let the laughter bubble over. If the ever-efficient PC Doyle knew that not only was Flynn back on the scene but that she’d asked him to move in with her, she guessed he wouldn’t be impressed.

‘You’re looking brighter,’ Rivka said later, sipping on the glass of wine she’d declared herself in need of.

‘I feel it,’ Jodie said, smiling.

‘Have the police been in touch to tell you they’ve arrested that Flynn character?’

Was it only Friday when Jodie had been convinced that Flynn was to blame for everything? For a moment, she was struck by how her convictions had changed so rapidly and it worried her. ‘Yes, they called around this morning, they’ve spoken to him but he swore he had nothing to do with the packages. So, I’m going back to my original theory that Victor is behind it all.

Rivka raised an eyebrow but said nothing as she sipped her wine.

‘I’m trying to figure out why. Maybe he wanted to make trouble for me,’ Jodie said, almost to herself. ‘After all, he served time for his crime. I did none for mine.’

Rivka choked on her wine and thumped herself on the chest. ‘You’re trying to kill me! Don’t be ridiculous, you committed no crime. How many times do I have to say it… you were a child.’
