‘What about it?’ She saw confusion cross her friend’s face. ‘I’m not going to be on it. As soon as the court grants the adoption, a copy of the order is sent to the General Register Office and they enter the details in the Adopted Children’s Register. After that, I’m wiped away. A new certificate of birth is issued in the child’s new name. There is no reference on it to him being adopted so there’s no guarantee that his parents ever even told him. He was a newborn: and they were heading to Australia. It would have been simple to pass him off as their own. Simpler for all concerned.’ Jodie smiled. ‘And you may bet it was what my mother would have encouraged.’

‘Then we’re back to it being Victor who left the baby shoes.’

‘And back to trying to figure out why.’ Jodie rested her head against the wall behind. ‘Looks like I’m going to have to wait for whatever he does next.’

‘He had his name removed from the sex offenders register only four weeks ago,’ Rivka said, her forehead creased as she puzzled a thought through. ‘Maybe he had nothing to do with the medication being left in the nursing home and leaving the shoes was a memorial thing or something, marking an end to a period in his life. Perhaps that’s all you’ll hear from him.’

‘Perhaps.’ It was only a thread of hope to hang on to but it was something. ‘Thanks for listening. It helps to talk about it with someone who knows my history.’

Rivka checked her watch. ‘I guess that means you haven’t told lover boy.’ She gave Jodie a reassuring smile. ‘That’s not a criticism. You’ve plenty of time to tell him if you want to. Now, I’d better get back to work.’

They stood together. Rivka reached for Jodie and enveloped her in a hug. ‘I want to hear all about him, next time we meet.’

‘Until I get another job, I’ll have plenty of time to meet for coffee so lots of time to fill you in. Suffice to say that it’s going well. He’s gorgeous, you’ll like him.’

‘Just what you need. Better fly.’ And Rivka was gone in a flurry of hand-waving, still waving as she hurried across reception and through a door at the back, leaving Jodie with a smile on her lips that gradually faded as she considered what her friend had suggested. Perhaps she was right. Maybe it was simply Victor’s way of marking the end of a chapter.
