“First Marisol and now her,” she said, nodding in Tracy’s direction. “I can’t be a friendly neighbor if I have to be worried about being shot by the women in your life every time I go out.”
“My apologies, Ms. Casey, but Kim was my sister. She was the only family I had, and my anger over her death isn’t completely gone.” Tracy wasn’t exactly contrite, but she was civil. “I’d never do anything to harm you or your family, and I’d never betray Hector by going behind his back.”
The fury over Tracy’s attack wasn’t completely gone, but she took a breath and tried to let it go. “Next time don’t believe everything Nunzio tells you to make himself look good.”
“You want her out?” Hector asked. One more squeeze made Tracy hiss, but then Hector let go.
“Forget about it, and let’s get to what my people found,” Cain said, going into what happened at the pub. “We’ve talked to almost everyone involved, and their orders came from Pablo Castillo. Do you know who that is?”
Hector closed his eyes and shook his head. “I have never heard that name.”
“It was worth a shot, but we’ll deal with him too once he’s found. I know Carlos was going to talk to you about Cesar Kalina and what he offered my cousin, Colin.” She waited until he nodded. “Colin turned him down with the explanation that he was exclusive to Carlos.”
“Carlos tell me this, but what does it have to do with my fields and business?”
“We’re getting to that. Do you know Jerome Rhodes?”
Hector shook his head but was looking at Tracy. She stayed quiet until he waved her on.
“Someone named Jerome Rhodes called and asked to meet with Hector, but that was a while ago. It happened right before Gracelia Luis was taken out of the game by Carlos Luis.” Tracy made eye contact with Cain as if daring her to look away. Her intimidation game was laughable. “He never showed after that happened, but the reason he gave for the meeting was that he could deliver what Gracelia could not. We’ve never heard from him since, so I doubt he’ll be a problem.”
“He called Colin for a meeting and gave your name as a reference, Hector. Apparently, you’re working with him and letting him pick up your slack until you’re back in business.”
“What the fuck?” Hector put his hands on the arms of his chair and braced himself to slide closer. “Who you say he is?” His anger made his English slip a bit and she came close to smiling.
