Cain put the phone on speaker and handed off to Remi, who switched to Spanish, and Carlos didn’t interrupt her. He obviously felt more comfortable in Spanish and responded quickly. Cain was only able to catch a few words, but whatever else he was saying, it was animated.
Remi explained, “Rhodes was in business with Gracelia, but Carlos isn’t sure exactly who he is, and the guy seems to come out of nowhere. He wasn’t there, back when they went to the hotel to pick up Gracelia. Whoever he is, Rhodes has started making deals with small-time guys,” Remi said as Carlos agreed from his end. “He wasn’t anyone to worry about cause he was so small, but now with what happened to Hector, Rhodes has emerged.”
“He’s using Gracelia’s old contacts?” Cain asked.
“Sí, but only the stupid people I do not want,” Carlos said. “Gracelia think she take over for my father, but the people stay with me.”
“Thank you, Carlos.” She thought Jerome Rhodes would be worth looking into.
“I meet with Hector. He call like you say, and I help him.”
“Good, it’s not going to be a bad thing if Hector owes you a favor. Take care, amigo, and I’ll be calling again when I have more on Rhodes.”
“Gracias, and I will ask too.” Carlos hung up and she glanced at Katlin.
“Colin, what’s your schedule for the next week?”
“I’m here for the night, then going home. I don’t like being away from the business too long, but if you need me to do something, I will.”
“There’s one thing. I need you to go into business with Jerome Rhodes.” Her statement made everyone look at her like she was crazy. “The sooner the better.”
Chapter Twenty-two
“What do you have?” Cain asked Finley a week later. Their vacation seemed like a year ago since they’d been slammed from the time they’d arrived at home. She wanted some answers before sending Colin back to meet with Jerome Rhodes, and a week should’ve been plenty of time to find something.
“Aside from the location of Nina, a whole lot of nothing. I checked with my contacts, and Jerome Rhodes doesn’t exist. The first time he hit any radar was when he flew in from Mexico on business, but that’s been a while ago. There’s no record of him going back, or any activity here.” Finley read from her laptop. “The house where Colin met him is being leased by a corporation, but I can’t find any physical address for that either, except for a PO box in Mexico.”
