“Jerome Rhodes. Like Tracy says, he was with Gracelia, but there’s no background on this guy. Using your name made me think about his conversation with Colin. Moving major product from Florida to Arizona, New York to Seattle, and everywhere in between means he benefited from what happened to you. There’s a sudden opening, and he’s filling it.” She could see the rage building, and if she aimed him in the right direction, he’d burn a path to Rhodes, saving her the time.
“Gracelia couldn’t even hold on to what her brother had, so how is some guy who was begging for scraps making a move on Hector?” Tracy’s question was a good one, but Cain expected Hector to slap her from the way he turned on her.
“Easy, this guy’s a planner,” Cain said. “When you plan and you have the right people, you can do what everyone else would think insane. And I’m not saying this is the guy, but I have Colin meeting with him again to see what information we can get.” She held her finger up when Hector opened his mouth. They’d never get anywhere if she let him build himself into a froth. “Once I have that answer, then I’m going to gift-wrap him and deliver him to you. I’m guessing there’s no way to replant your fields and harvest before you run out of inventory, but I doubt anyone would stop you from taking what belongs to Rhodes, if he’s behind what happened to you.”
“Give me your word.” Hector stood and held his hand out.
In that moment, she thought there were worse things than the devil, and Hector fell into that category. He was friendly enough, but he made her feel dirty.
“Hector, I’ve never lied to you,” she said, her eyes on his hand. “Sometimes you get angry because I tell you the truth, and I’m not going to change that now.” He gripped her hand when she accepted his. “All you need to remember is I’m not your enemy, and you need to remind everyone in your orbit that’s the case.”
“Marisol is gone from my life, and Tracy will never give you a problem.”
She held his hand a bit longer and then let go, not really wanting an explanation about Marisol. “I’ll be in touch as soon as Colin comes back from his meeting.”
“I will ask about Pablo Castillo to see who he works for. Thank you, Cain. I owe you a debt if you find this man.”
“Just give me your word that you’ll wait for me to call. If you drive this guy underground before we get to him, we’ll never find him. That’s all I’m asking.”
“I give you my word, and thank you.”
