“I’ll be home all day, but let’s see what Hector has to say. Once I get the pub and Josh sorted out, we might need to make a trip to New York.” She hadn’t forgotten Sacha Oblonsky and his ambitions. “Just for a night, but like Chicago, there might be time for dinner and some fun.”
“That’s a good way to make me forget that you’re inviting that asshole and his bitch of a daughter over for coffee,” Emma whispered in her ear.
“Such colorful language, Mrs. Casey.” She chuckled when Emma slapped her ass. “And I promise—no coffee unless his story’s good.”
It took forty minutes for Hector to make it to the house. The weather had changed from the blue skies of the morning to a downpour that had dropped the temperature into the forties. That was unusual for the city, but it was nice to light the fireplaces every so often. She stared into the flames until Hector walked into the office, and she wasn’t surprised to see Tracy Stegal with him.
“Hector…Ms. Stegal, welcome.” She pointed them to the chairs that faced her desk, and everyone else took one of the seats Katlin had brought in. “Hector, my apologies for not calling sooner, but I’d like to go over some things with you.”
“Yes, my trip to Cozumel let me learn things I should learn from you.” Hector sounded pissed, and he did a good job of burying those emotions, but gritted teeth were hard to ignore. “Carlos Luis likes you.”
“It’s mutual. I understand what Carlos has been through because of what happened to his father.”
“How about my sister?” Tracy asked, biting off each word. She shut her mouth when Hector glared at her.
Cain felt a chill go through her, and her first reaction was to put a bullet through this bitch’s forehead. She understood loss, but she understood controlling yourself in business even more. “Your sister was Nunzio Luca’s fault. He sacrificed her to save himself, but I’m not in the mood to explain it again. I’m also not going to sit here and take shit from you in my house. If you want to know who destroyed your fields, figure it out yourself.” She stood up and leaned over her desk. “And if you don’t understand the rules of the game, you shouldn’t play. Kim did, but she decided to play with an idiot, and it got her killed. The only explanation for that is that she was in love with Nunzio, and love made her stupid as well as blind.”
“Cain, that will not happen again,” Hector said. “You have my apology, and I take responsibility for Tracy.” Hector reached over and squeezed Tracy’s wrist to the point of her wincing as he was talking.
