“From the look of her, the accident was real,” Linda said. She pointed at the screen of Finley’s laptop where the frozen image of Nicola was still up. “Maybe she wasn’t the only one who survived, but they didn’t walk away without scars. Fredrick might be alive, but is he up and walking?”
“They were twins,” Abigail said. “Even if we find Nicola and cut her into small enough pieces that she’ll never be found, he’ll retaliate as soon as he’s able.”
“That’s true, but I don’t plan to stop until we’re done.” Cain glanced at each one of them, so they’d know she was serious. “When we’re done, the Antakov family will be a small piece of history not worth remembering.”
“Amen,” Abigail and Linda said together.
Chapter Twenty-one
“Our best bet is to start with the club in New Orleans,” Finley said. Abigail seemed to be reading through the information about the sex club Nicola owned in New Orleans, and Cain wondered how long she’d continue to pummel herself for someone else’s sins.
“I’d concentrate on the spots where there was already a Hell Fire Club and compare,” Linda said.
Tim and Joshua had come into the kitchen and introduced themselves, and Emma invited them back to the house so they could meet Hayden. Both boys were older than their son, but they seemed eager to come back with them. Cain got the feeling they were relieved to be surrounded by people rather than on their own. The boys went back to watching TV.
“There’s no way of knowing exactly where Nicola has been, but you’re right—none of these places seems to have closed.”
“David Eaton probably took them over when Nicola was out of commission, and she took them back when he was killed. Finding her might be as easy as following the money.”
Finley laughed and kissed Abigail’s cheek. “That I can do. It was my job for the last eight years.”
“Finley is the black sheep of the family,” Cain said to Linda. “She decided to become an FBI agent instead of going into the family business, but all that training might come in handy.”
“You’re the one who was investigating Nicola?” Linda finally showed some emotion by laughing. “That’s why you were undercover with the cops, right?”
“I was trying to figure out if someone in that precinct was dirty,” Finley said as she took notes.
“If you met Captain Brock Howard, you found him. He’s been on David’s payroll for years and is probably the reason you never got very far. That type of information is in one of the ledgers I kept, if that’s useful.”
Linda had brought a total of three large bags with her, and they meant the death of whatever world Nicola had left.
