  88. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

She shook her head. “You know damn well that a jury can still convict on circumstantial evidence. Now, in addition to Ms. Spencer seeing me at the house, my fingerprints being confirmed at the murder scene, and the mountain of motive they have against me for wanting to keep Butch from disclosing the abortion, they have Dr. Ward from the crime lab to testify that the blood droplets found in my Crown Vic match Butch’s type. Ward will also testify that the hair found on Butch’s couch and on his damn robe matches the sample I provided.” She paused. “How do we counter that?”

Bo gazed down at the concrete floor. “We don’t.”

“More like we can’t. We live in the world of CSI New York and CSI Miami and CSI New Orleans, and Sack is going to turn that damn courtroom into CSI Pulaski and have that jury eating out of his hand.”

Bo had no answer to this. The General was right. It was the problem with having a lawyer as good as she was becoming a client. No amount of bullshit he slung at this juncture could cover up the fact that they were pigs heading to slaughter. “I’m sorry, General. I’ve done my best.”

“I know that, Bo, and I appreciate it. You didn’t make these facts.”

A hollow concession, and Bo took it as such. “I’ll see you at the courthouse tomorrow morning at eight thirty.”

Bo stood and walked to the door. “I want you to remember something, General.”

“What’s that?”

“My record in that courtroom over there is seventy-seven wins and one loss, and my only defeat was to my client in this case.”

She stood and walked toward him. After giving him a quick hug, she whispered, “Thank you, Bo.”

He bit his lip and managed a nod. Then he left the jail.

Back at the office, Bo paced around the long conference room table.

Lona stood against the far wall with her arms crossed. Since the arraignment of Helen Lewis, and despite the building being under construction for a month to repair the damage done by the fire, the law firm had opened ten additional files, eight of which were personal injury cases. Two of those, in addition to the Jess Reynolds matter, had reached six-figure settlements.

Bocephus Haynes had resurrected his law firm, and consistent with his daughter’s wishes, he’d bought a house in downtown Pulaski about two blocks from their old house. Next week, he would stand before Judge Woodruff and plead his case that his kids belonged with him in Pulaski.

Regardless of whether he won next week or not, he’d been given a chance at redemption by General Helen Lewis. She’d literally breathed life back into his corpse when she asked him to represent her in this case.
