“Well . . . ,” Lona continued, ripping off the bandana and wiping her face with her forearm. Without the covering, Bo noticed that her hair was strawberry blonde and trimmed short on the sides and in the back with bangs in the front. “. . . a prick named Michael Zannick raped my little girl, and General Lewis was supposed to be prosecuting him this week.” She scoffed. “Instead, she’s sitting in jail for a crime she couldn’t possibly have committed.”
“How do you know that?” Bo asked.
“I know the General. She’s tough, mean, and fair. On my second charge for possession, she said she’d get me some treatment if I pled guilty. I did, and she followed through on her end.”
“You’re clean.”
Lona nodded. “Sober three years next month.”
“Congratulations.”
“I don’t want or deserve your praise. I do want a job.”
Bo again peered around the office. He’d been gone three hours, and Lona Burks had transformed the place from a complete dump into something a person might consider presentable. Though there was much left to do, she’d made a big dent. He looked at her. “I can hire you to keep the place clean.” He paused. “Is there anything else you can do?”
She gazed down at the hardwood and leaned forward to pet Lee Roy. The dog tensed, but then Bo saw him relax when Lona’s fingers began to caress his ears. “Not sure about me, are you?” she asked, and then she looked up at Bo. “I can answer the phone, and I’m sure I can learn how to file documents on the court’s electronic system. I can get someone in the clerk’s office to teach me that. I’m a quick learner, and I’ll work my ass off.”
Bo again moved his eyes around the room. “I can see that.”
“How about it then?”
“Let me ask you something. Do you think this Zannick fellow might have had something to do with Butch Renfroe’s murder and General Lewis’s arrest?”
Lona didn’t hesitate in her response. “There’s not a doubt in my mind.”
Bo thought back to the General’s desperate plea as he was leaving the jail to find out everything he could about Michael Zannick. Helen had been ambivalent about whether Zannick had set her up, but Bo saw nothing of the sort in Lona Burks’s ardent glare. “You’re hired.”
