Bo started to agree and then heard several loud knocks on the door. He got up as Frannie Storm entered the small room. She glanced at Bo and then at Helen. “The grand jury has issued an indictment against you, General. Your arraignment has been set for June 5 at 9:00 a.m., which is a week from today.” She turned to Bo. “I wanted you to hear the news as soon as possible.”
“Big of you,” Bo said. The chief deputy wouldn’t be getting any thank-yous from him. Once Chief Storm had left the room, there was a period of silence as Bo and Helen processed what they had been told. At the arraignment, Helen would plead not guilty. Then Judge Connelly would set the case for trial.
Helen cleared her throat. “Have you learned anything more about that prostitution ring?”
“I’ve confirmed its existence with Darla Ford . . . and Lona Burks.”
“Lona?” Helen asked.
Bo gave a solemn nod.
“Will either of them agree to testify?”
“Darla won’t. She wouldn’t even admit to the ring, but her reaction to my mentioning it gave her away. Lona will, but . . .” His voice trailed off.
“But she’s not a credible witness.”
“No, she’s not. But even if she was, we still don’t have any evidence linking the ring to Butch’s murder.”
“But we’re closer,” Helen said.
Bo grinned. “Yes, we are.”
“And you should have more information this afternoon, right?”
Bo nodded and leaned his back against the wall. He pulled his phone out and checked the time. It was already past ten, and he was due in Decatur at one.
And I have a stop to make along the way . . .
“I’ve got to go, General.” Bo returned the cell to his pocket and headed for the door.
“Bo?”
He looked over his shoulder.
“Keep at it.” She smiled at him, and it was the first time he’d seen even a tinge of happiness in her face since she’d shown up at the Hazel Green farm the night after Butch Renfroe’s murder.
“Wide ass open,” Bo said, winking at her as he left the jail.

Terry Grimes Ford/Buick was located on West College Street a half mile past the Legends Steakhouse. Bo took a cab to the dealership and walked into the all-glass display area in no mood to be accosted by car salesmen. “I need to see Terry Grimes,” Bo told the twentysomething blonde who greeted him with an energetic “What can we do for you, sir?”
“I’m sorry, Mr. . . .”
“Haynes. Bocephus Haynes. I need to see Mr. Grimes right away.”
“Well, Mr. Grimes is showing a car to someone. Could you—”
