“I’m going to allow it,” Connelly said, peering over the bench at Grimes. “Answer the question, Mr. Grimes.”
“I’ve never been charged with prostitution of any kind.”
“Not charged, sir. Investigated. Were you ever investigated by the sheriff’s office for prostitution?”
“No, I was not.”
Bo gave a look of incredulity. Then he went over to the defense table and grabbed the ancient file jacket with the label “Renfroe, File #95-0047” on the manila tab. “Mr. Grimes, isn’t it true that for two decades you and Butch Renfroe and Lou Horn were engaged in a prostitution ring that you ran out of the Sundowners Club on Highway 64?”
“That’s a lie,” Grimes said, spittle flying out of his mouth when he spoke.
“And occasionally, every so often, y’all would use the old Sands Motor Hotel for a few of these soirees, wouldn’t you?”
Grimes’s face became ashen as Bo slowly removed a videotape from one of the folders of the file jacket. He didn’t answer the question, but Bo didn’t care.
“And on some of these occasions, you and Butch liked to videotape these encounters, didn’t you?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Grimes said. His voice had become weak.
“Mr. Grimes, would it surprise you to know that Butch had given a few of the tapes to his lawyer, Raymond Pickalew, for safekeeping?” He held up the tape in his hand for Grimes and the jury to see.
When Bo turned back to the witness, Terry was looking at the videotape like it might be a poisonous snake.
“Mr. Grimes,” Bo began, not waiting for an answer. He approached the stand and held the tape in front of him. “I’m going to ask you again. Were you a part of a prostitution ring with Butch Renfroe and Lou Horn?”
“Objection, Your Honor,” Sack said. “Again, Judge, this is completely irrelevant.”
“Overruled. Answer the question, Terry.”
Terry Grimes bit his lip and gazed down at the podium. When he spoke, his voice was a low squeak. “I plead the Fifth.”
A loud rustling went up from the gallery, and Bo could smell blood in the water. “Mr. Grimes, did a man named Michael Zannick ever threaten to go public with his knowledge of this prostitution scheme if the rape charges brought by General Lewis against him weren’t dropped?”
Grimes cleared his throat and then croaked into the microphone, “I plead the Fifth.”
Bo looked at the jury. “Mr. Grimes, where is the computer you stole from Butch Renfroe’s house?”
“Objection, Your Honor. Lack of foundation!” Sack howled.
“Overruled,” Judge Connelly said.
Terry Grimes had started to cry. “I plead the Fifth,” he said.

Terry Grimes was taken into police custody immediately after being excused from the stand.
“Judge, I’d ask for a mistrial,” Sack Glover pleaded. “The questioning of Mr. Grimes by Mr. Haynes was reckless and improper.”
