Mr. Hoshima had been polite but had reiterated the company line since the rape charge had been filed. “We want to do this deal with you, Michael, but we can’t take the risk of signing the contract and then have you be convicted of a sex crime.” He had paused. “And we aren’t willing to announce a deal until you are exonerated. Otherwise, we risk having a public relations nightmare.”
Zannick had said he understood and had told Ichiro that he would keep him apprised of the status.
Now, Zannick glared at his phone as if it were a traitor. Finally, he snatched the device and made the call.
Finn answered on the first ring.
“I think it’s time I heed your advice as it concerns Mr. Haynes,” Zannick said, pausing and sipping his tea.
“You want me to send him a message?”
“Yes, I do, but I don’t want any screwups in the delivery like you had with Mr. Rowe.”
“Don’t worry, brother,” Finn said, his tone grim. “The message will be delivered.”

Lona wrung her hands and gazed at her half-drunk Diet Coke. Next to it, the cheeseburger she’d ordered was untouched. “I’m sorry. Those days are hazy. I was messed up on coke and meth so much that everything kind of runs together.”
Bo reached out and touched her hand. “Thank you for telling me. If you don’t mind me asking, who was looking after Mandy on the nights you worked at the Sundowners?”
“My aunt Kathy watched her for me. She’s dead now. Passed about three years ago.”
Bo nodded. “Around the time you quit drugs and went to rehab. Was her death what cleaned you up?”
Lona finally looked at him. Her eyes had glistened over with tears. “Not really. Kathy was good to me, but she never told me the deal. It was the General who helped me get clean. When I finally got busted for possession, she was hard on me but fair. She placed me in a good rehab program, and it took.” She wiped her eyes. “I owe her.”
Bo took a sip of water. Once Lona had started telling her knowledge of the ring, he’d stopped drinking beer, thinking it wasn’t appropriate given the circumstances. “I hate to recap, but I’m a lawyer, and that’s what I do. You’ve told me that the dancers you are aware of who were in the ring were Darla Ford, yourself, Tammie Gentry, Candy Peterson, and Richelle Cooper.”
She nodded and bit her lip.
“None of who still live in Pulaski, correct?”
“Correct. Darla is obviously in Destin, and I don’t know where the others are.”
Bo sighed and ate a bite of a french fry. Unlike his assistant, he had wolfed down his cheeseburger, which was the house specialty. “Even if we were to find the others, I suspect their attitude will be the same as Darla’s.”
