Another crackle lit up the air, and Finn dropped his weapon, screaming in pain. Seeing an opening, Bo crawled on his hands and knees toward Finn’s gun, but his cousin beat him to the punch.
Booker T. grabbed the pistol and aimed it at Finn, who was writhing in pain on the ground as his crew continued to peer around the dark farm for where the shotgun blasts were coming from.
“I ought to put an end to you,” Booker T. growled. “You and your bank ruined my life. I got nothing ’cause of you people.”
“Don’t,” Bo said, trying to speak in a calm tone but out of breath from the excitement and rush of the last few seconds. “He’s not worth it.”
After several tense seconds, Booker T. took a step backward, keeping the gun on Finn. “Get out of here.”
Finn was on his knees, still cradling his right hand, which was covered in blood. “You bastards are going to jail,” he gasped. Then he climbed to his feet and walked toward the Escalade. After one of his crew swept the glass off the seat, he climbed inside the passenger seat. Thirty seconds later, the car was gone, the only remaining sign of it being the dust from the gravel that had spewed upon the SUV’s departure.
For a long while, the only sound was Bo’s and Booker T.’s shallow breaths. Even the crickets seemed to have been driven away by the gunfire.
“Glad you brought reinforcements,” Booker T. finally said, turning to the woodlands behind and to the east of the barn. “Why don’t you call whoever it is out?”
Bo was silent. “I didn’t bring anyone with me, cousin.”
They looked at each other. “Then who was that out there that just saved our asses?”
Bo gazed in the direction of the woods. “I have no idea.” Then, after wiping a sheen of sweat from his forehead and spitting a strand of blood on the gravel, Bo peered hard at his cousin. “Booker T., what in the hell have you gotten into?”

Bo awoke the next morning to the pleasant aroma of coffee. His body ached all over from the butt whipping he’d received from his cousin, his upper lip fat and swollen and his midsection bruised from being kicked.
